Ag Dean Edwards to Retire
By Molly Klocksin, IANR
After 11 years as dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and
Natural
Resources, Donald Edwards will relinquish those responsibilities June
30.
Edwards served in a dual capacity as dean of the college and the
Nebraska
College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis from 1989 to 1995 and will
remain
CASNR dean until mid-year. He is a professor of biological systems
engineering
and has been actively involved in the department's teaching program.
Edwards plans to retire from the university Dec. 31, 2000. However, on
July 1, he will become director of NN21 half time and half-time
coordinator
of special projects for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural
Resources.
NN21 is a W.K. Kellogg Foundation-sponsored initiative focusing on a
statewide effort to meet Nebraskans' learning needs in the 21st century.
He will continue these responsibilities through June 30, 2001.
The IANR special projects assignment will include extended education
and is expected to continue until Edwards' official retirement Dec. 31.
Edwards said he looks forward to developing outreach programs, especially
extended education courses, in the position.
Irv Omtvedt, IANR vice chancellor, who is retiring June 30, said he
hopes
to name an interim dean in time to work with Edwards during the period
before
July 1. Because the next IANR vice chancellor will select the permanent
dean, the interim dean is likely to serve at least a year, Omtvedt
said.
During Edwards' tenure as dean, CASNR enrollment increased 30 percent
and transfer programs with Nebraska post-secondary schools were adopted.
Edwards oversaw curriculum changes that helped create high demand for
CASNR
graduates.

recognized
at a reception in the Nebraska Union from 3:30 to 5 p.m., with the award
