NET Honors Several for Service, Support of TV, Radio

U.S. Sen. Robert Kerrey, the Nebraska Arts Council, Norman and Louise "Peppy" Bahr, Gay Gallup and Nora Huscher were honored Nov. 10 by the Nebraska Educational Telecommunications Recognition for their outstanding service and support of the state's public television and radio networks.

"These awards allow us to honor some of the outstanding people who believe in the mission of public broadcasting in Nebraska and support our work by going the extra mile in a variety of ways," said NET General Manager Rod Bates.

Kerrey received the "2000 Distinguished Service" award. According to Bates, Kerrey has been a stalwart supporter of educational telecommunications and public broadcasting during his 12 years in the U.S. Senate. He was instrumental in securing several federal grants and contracts that helped position NET as an innovator and national leader in new media production. He worked to protect Nebraska consumers from high telecommunications and technology rates, while at the same time ensuring that rural areas are not left out of the digital revolution.

A "2000 Partner of the Year" award was presented to the Nebraska Arts Council, a state agency that promotes, cultivates and sustains the arts for the people of Nebraska. The Nebraska Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts make NAC's funding programs possible. The NAC has a 25-year history of working with NET in providing funding for programs that bring the richness of the arts in Nebraska to citizens via the Nebraska ETV Network and Nebraska Public Radio Network. In addition, last fall the Nebraska Arts Council presented Nebraskans for Public Television, Inc., with one of the first grants from the Nebraska Cultural Preservation Endowment Fund.

A "2000 Partner of the Year" award was also presented to Norman and Louise "Peppy" Bahr of Grand Island. The Bahrs began supporting public broadcasting more than 24 years ago. Among their many contributions, they helped establish NPRN in 1990, and Ms. Bahr served on the board of directors for NPTV from 1988 to 1993 and again from 1995 to 2000. She also serves on the board of directors for the NET Commission Leasing Corporation, a not-for-profit group which facilitates acquisition of the equipment needed to comply with new digital television standards. The Bahrs are recognized as members of the Jack G. McBride Society, created to honor major donors to NPTV and the Public Radio Nebraska Foundation, as well as the Friends of the Future Society, which recognizes donors who establish bequests and planned gifts to NPTV and PRNF.

The "2000 Volunteer of the Year" award was presented to Gay Gallup of Lincoln, who has enthusiastically given her time and talent in support of the NPRN for more than nine years. After she and her husband Gordon Gallup donated a computer to NPRN to house the music library, she personally entered the titles of most of the 9,500 compact discs into the music library's master database. She has also been involved in many other volunteer capacities, from answering the phone to arranging food donations and seeking challenge grants for pledge drives.

The "A. James Ebel Outstanding Employee" award for 2000 went to Nora Huscher of Lincoln. Huscher has been the Human Resource Data Specialist at NET since January 1999. She was nominated by several of her fellow employees because of her positive attitude, diligence and willingness to work extra hours in order to implement the new electronic timesheet program for all NET employees. In addition, she also initiates new employees and is recognized throughout the organization as being patient, positive, helpful, cheerful and thorough.
