Final Weekly Scarlet May 3

This is the final weekly Scarlet for the semester. The Scarlet will publish monthly in the summer, June 14 and July 12. Weekly publication resumes Aug. 16. Deadlines for the summer issues are June 7 and July 5. Also, please note that the Scarlet office does not make address changes for university employees. These are made by departments using the Personal Data Form. When employees leave the university or are hired, the PDF triggers the address deletion or initiation. Employees who remain on the payroll as on-call or other status will continue to receive the Scarlet regardless of whether they keep regular hours. Non-university employees can make address changes by contacting Diane Taurins at 321 Canfield, 0424.

Canfield Elevator Inoperable During Construction Project

The elevator in the Canfield Administration building will be deactivated during the summer as part of project to make all levels of Canfield, north and south, accessible by elevator.

The project will require the reconfiguration of both men's and women's restrooms and the mailroom located near the elevator shaft, as well the construction of new elevator lobbies in Canfield North. Work will begin on or about May 21, and the elevator will be deactivated on June 4. The elevator is expected to become operational again Aug. 17. During the construction period various restrooms will be temporarily closed as functions are shifted to provide new access paths from Canfield North to the elevator.

Ashfall 10th Anniversary Celebration Is June 9

Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its opening with a June 9 open house at the park, located north of Royal in northeast Nebraska.

A fossil site of international significance, Ashfall contains the skeletons of hundreds of prehistoric animals who were buried under a bed of volcanic ash 10 million years ago. Some of the best-preserved fossil rhinoceroses, horses, camels and birds known anywhere have been (and are being) excavated by University of Nebraska State Museum crews.

A complimentary picnic lunch featuring bison burgers will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., following by a 1:30 program commemorating the park's first 10 years and addressing its future. The park will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Paleontologists will be stationed throughout the site to interpret various aspects of the dig for visitors. Other activities will include a hands-on opportunity for children to make their own casts of rhino teeth, highlights of video documentaries that have been made about the park, and displays about future plans for the park.

Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park is a joint project of the NU State Museum and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
