Library professor's training module wins award

An associate professor of libraries has received an award from the Innovative User's Group for creating a training module for libraries that use the Innovative Interface Inc. software.

Scott Childers learned that focusing on simple design and quality of content was important when it came to developing the Online Millennium Training Module, which received the Most Innovative Staff Instruction Process or Training Program Award.

Innovative Interface, Inc. is a software company and producer of online library catalog systems installed in thousands of libraries of all types and sizes around the world. University Libraries has used the system since 1990. When the company released its latest version of the cataloging and circulation software to its customers in February 2001, it had evolved into a graphical interface that uses the latest JAVA technology.

"With this latest update of the program, many of the Libraries' staff changed how they did their work and needed a self-paced tool to reinforce what they were learning about the system improvements," said Childers, who is developing additional online modules for staff to use in training.

Childers will be recognized during the opening session at the 10th Annual Innovative User's Group meeting in Houston from April 27-30. The award includes two free training workshops of his choice at the Innovative headquarters in Emeryville, Calif.
