Hallbeck elected chair of ergonomics group

Susan Hallbeck, associate professor of industrial & management systems engineering, recently was elected chair of the Industrial Ergonomics Technical Group. The group is part of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and is concerned with the application of ergonomics data and principles for improving safety, productivity and quality of work in industry. It concentrates on service and manufacturing processes, operations and environments, including the design of products that form the basis of industrial employment.

Hallbeck will serve two years.


Bode receives award for business program

At the NAEB/MINK Regional Conference in Lincoln in October, Bill Bode, UNL director of Purchasing, Inventory and Materiels Management, was presented with a plaque of appreciation for his involvement in developing the NAEB/MINK "Historically Underutilized" Business Scholarship program.


Arboretum honors outstanding efforts with awards

Seven individuals, three organizations and a group of schoolchildren have been honored by the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum for their contributions to tree planting, community beautification, landscaping and plant conservation.

The awards were presented during NSA's annual awards in November. The winners:

  • Wilton Dorris of Lemoyne won the Johnny Appleseed Award for his 22 years of work with young people to plant nearly 50,000 trees around Lake McConaughy near Ogallala.
  • Steve Rasmussen of Wayne, a University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension forester, won the Tree Planters State Award for his leadership in developing arboretum sites in northeast Nebraska.
  • Randy Fox, superintendent of the Arbor Lodge State Historical Park in Nebraska City, won the President's Citation for his work at the park.
  • Louis and Geri Gilbert of Cedar Bluffs won the Blazing Star Award for their work to preserve their property, which is the site of Pahuk Hill, one of the most sacred sites of the Pawnee people.
  • The Alma Rotary Club won one Honor Award for being the caretaker of the Pheasant Point Arboretum at Harlan County Lake since 1994. The Good Sam Landscape Committee also won this award for beautifying the landscape around Scribner's Good Samaritan Center.
  • Martin Hansen of Brownville won the Volunteer Award. He has volunteered hundreds of hours of labor and his tools and equipment at the Governor Furnas Arboretum since 1991.
  • The Comstock Ain't Ready to Expire (CARE) organization won the Commendation Award for its development of the Comstock Centennial Park after a fire destroyed three buildings in the business district.
  • Marcia Crofutt of Grant won the Educator Award. Crofutt worked with her students and their parents to create and maintain a garden at the school, which now has a role in several aspects of the school's science curriculum.
  • The fourth- and fifth-graders at Lincoln's Kahoa Elementary School won the Young Planters Award for helping restore the historic Ernst Herminghaus landscape design on the Nebraska State Capitol grounds. Since 1998, these students have raised money through class projects to restore 35 trees and more than 50 shrubs to the grounds.


Porter earns security certification

Mark Porter, manager of Mail and Distribution Services, recently received the Mail Center Security Certification. He received this certification by meeting the established requirements set forth by the MAILCOM board of directors as it relates to Mail Center Security Training.
