Calkins President-Elect of Meat Science Group

Chris Calkins, a meat scientist and professor at UNL, has been selected as president-elect of the American Meat Science Association. He will serve one year as president-elect, one year as president and one year as the past president. He also will be on the executive board.

Calkins is the third Institute of Agriculture and Natural resources faculty member at UNL to be elected to this position in 10 years.



IANR Entomologist Wins National Award

John Witkowski, a UNL entomologist, is among 12 recipients nationwide of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Honors Award.

Witkowski received the award Sept. 20 in a ceremony at USDA in Washington, D.C. Witkowski is a professor of entomology and associate director of NU's Northeast Research and Extension Center at Concord where he is involved in extension and research activities. Witkowski was cited for his work in pest management, specifically the environmental and human aspects of chemigation and integrated pest management programs.



Engineering Professor Receives Thesis Award

Tian Zhang, a UNL assistant professor of civil engineering at UNO, has received the 1995 Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award co-sponsored by Parsons Engineering Science and the Association of Environmental Engineering Professors. Zhang completed his doctoral studies at the University of Cincinnati in March 1994. His thesis, "Influence of Biofilm Structure on Transport and Transformation Processes in Biofilms," was completed under the direction of Paul Bishop.


NET Series Win National, State Awards

The Nebraska Educational Telecommunications series Math Vantage: "A World of Quadrilaterals" has earned first prize from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) in the Education category. Math Vantage: "Surface Area and Volume" also earned a Silver Plaque in recent Nebraska Broadcasters Association Aksarben Awards.

Math Vantage is produced and directed by Luis Peon-Casanova of the UNL Television Learning Services Unit. The series is co-produced for the Nebraska Math and Science Initiative.

The Nebraska ETV Network program Deadly Fields, which discussed the impact of pesticides on farmland and farmworkers, won the Nebraska Broadcasters Association Aksarben Award for Best of Category, Service to Agriculture.

Deadly Fields is a production of the UNL Television Science, Outreach and Specials Unit for broadcast on the Nebraska ETV Network. It was produced and directed by Joe Turco. Pat Aylward was videographer/editor and Steve Gottlieb was audio engineer.



'Math Vantage' Takes Honorable Mention

The NET-produced Math Vantage series has earned an honorable mention award from the 43rd Annual Columbus International Film and video Festival for its program "Data: How Do You Get It?" The festival is based in Columbus, Ohio.
