As part of the UNL Stockless Office Supply Program, in cooperation
with Boise Cascade Office Products, a free workshop entitled "Back to the
BasicsŠPens and Paper" will be a two part seminar presented by David
Cooper of Papermate Corporation along with Paul Dougherty of Boise
Cascade Paper Division. Participants will be provided with an opportunity
to learn more about these products. Two sessions are available on Feb. 1;
the first from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and the second from 1 to 2 p.m. Both
sessions will be held in the Purchasing Department, located in the
Business Services Complex at 17th and Y Streets. A flyer with more
information and a registration form is being distributed via campus mail.
If you do not receive a flyer and would like to attend, contact the
Purchasing Department at 2-2126 to register. Space is limited.
On Feb. 13, there will be a seminar on bloodborne pathogens presented
at the Business Services Complex, 1700 Y St. North Conference Room, 9 to
11 a.m. This seminar will cover the control of pathogens, specifically
hepatitis B, HIV, and others that can cause disease in humans. The
seminar will include the OSHA bloodborne pathogen standard and work
practices related to the prevention of the communication of bloodborne
diseases. Contact Del Weed at 2-9551 to register for this seminar.
During the month of December, Mail & Distribution Services began delivering airline tickets for faculty and staff on City and East Campuses. The travel agencies deliver the airline tickets to 1820 R Street by 10:30 a.m. Tickets received will then be delivered in the afternoon mail. Tickets which are delivered to 1820 R Street after 10:30 a.m. will be delivered to the individual by the UNL Courier service.
All ticket packets will be delivered with a UNL Control Slip. This
control slip is to be signed upon receipt of the tickets and the white
copy is to be returned to Mail & Distribution Services as soon as
possible. If you have any questions concerning this delivery procedure,
contact Mail and Distribution Services at 2-2532.
Travel and Transport is once again providing travel services to the
University community. If you have any questions, or need additional
information, contact James Main at 2-3322.
W-2 forms will be distributed to UNL departments on Jan. 26. The format of the W-2 forms has changed from previous years. They will also be printed on a laser printer, which should make them easier to read.
Employees should note that the amount shown as gross year-to-date earnings on their last ckeck stub/payroll deposit advice and the amount shown as taxable income on their check stub/payroll deposit advice and W-2 forms may be different because:
Tax shelter requirement deductions reduced taxable gross pay for 1995 (annuities will be taxed upon receipt during retirement).
Employee deductions for reimbursement accounts, long term disability, accidental death and dismemberment, health/dental insurance and life insurance (except dependent life), have been withheld as pre-tax deductions; therefore, employees do not pay income tax on these premiums. If there is an amount in Box 13, there will be a code (letter) next to it. The codes are as follows:
C- Imputed income for life insurance income over $50,000 (for federal employees at IANR only)
E- Section 403(b) employee retirement deduction(s) for SRA(s) and
additional retirement.
For 1996, the federal income taxes, the standard deduction and the personal exemption amount have been indexed for inflation. These adjustments will result in a slight reduction in federal income tax withholding for most individuals. The value of each federal personal exemption will increase from $2,500 to $2,550 for 1996. The standard deduction for married persons filing joint returns will increase from $6,550 to $6,700; heads of households from $5,750 to $5,900; single persons from $3,900 to $4,000 and married persons filing separate returns from $3,275 to $3,350. The Nebraska state income tax withholding rates will not change.
It should be noted that withholding amounts for individuals are
affected by tax-sheltered retirement, pre-tax benefits and personal
allowances claimed on their W-4.
The Social Security (OASDI) tax rate will remain at 6.2% and the Medicare
(HI) will remain at 1.45%. The taxable wage base for the social security
portion of the tax will increase from $61,200 to $62,700. The taxable
wage base for the Medicare portion of the tax was removed beginning in
1994. Therefore, all covered wages will be subject to the 1.45% Medicare
tax.

Answer: Yes, that is true. UNL is working with Family Services and the Child Development Venture to provide care for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Care will be offered during the spring semester on days when Lincoln Public Schools are not in session: Jan. 15, 25 and 26; Feb. 16 and 19; March 18; and April 5, 8, 9 and 26.
Well-trained staff members from Family Services provide the care, and they offer developmentally appropriate programs for children with an emphasis on quality. Care is provided at the Cornerstone Church, 640 North 16th St. The fee is $10 per day per child, and this includes a hot lunch and morning and afternoon snacks.
For more specific information about this quality child care program, call Sandi Hohn at Family Service Child Care, 441-7921, or Lynn Murray at the Child Development Venture, 2-8640.
Children must be pre-registered. Registration packets are available
from Family Services or from Michele Strickler in Human Resources,
2-8033.
