New Arts Six will present "A Joyful Noise," a free public concert at
7:30 p.m. June 20 in Kimball Recital Hall. This concert is sponsored by
UNL Summer Sessions, the School of Music, the College of Fine and
Performing Arts, and Arts Are Basic. "A Joyful Noise" joins traditional
spirituals with the poetry of Paul Lawrence Dunbar (1872-1906), one of
the first nationally recognized black writers, in a theatrical setting of
word and song. This performance rounds out a multi-year cycle in the Arts
Are Basic program exploring the influences of the African aesthetic on
world culture. New Arts Six returns Feb. 11-12 for additional public and
Arts Are Basic performances.
Rough Crossing, directed by Kent Paul, will be performed June 12-22 in Howell Theatre and will be the first of three plays performed during the Nebraska Repertory Theatre 1996 Season.
Rough Crossing is a comedy by Tom Stoppard, from an original
play by Ferenc Molnar. Other plays this summer include Neil Simon's
Pulitzer-prize winning Lost in Younkers, directed by Constance
McCord, performed July 10-20 in Howell Theatre; and an Alan Ayckbourn
comedy, Table Manners, directed by Terence Lamude, performed July
24-Aug. 3, in the Johnny Carson Theatre.
Contemporary Quilts from the James Collection will be on display at the Sheldon Gallery, June 25 to Sept. 1. Drawn from the exceptional private collection of Ardis and Robert James, the show features 28 contemporary art quilts by such noted artists as Michael James, Nancy Crow, Therese May and Jan Myers-Newbury.
In addition to the Sheldon, the exhibit is sponsored by the Department
of Textiles, Clothing and Design.
