Exhibit Features Landscapes of Past and Present
A summer exhibition at the Great Plains Art Collection features works
of art from the permanent collection that reflect changing modes of
movement through the plains and mountain landscapes of the American West.
Moving Through the Landscape: Plains and Mountains, Past and
Present shows how artists of the 19th and 20th centuries have drawn
heavily upon romantic notions of this area as a vast, awe-inspiring
wilderness filled with the presence of untold resources and promise.
These artists of the past and present have depicted vistas of immense
prairie spaces as well as visions of the towering ranges of the Rocky
Mountains and Far West in their paintings and graphic works.
Artists in the exhibition include Albert Bierstadt, Karl Bodmer,
William Cary, Fremont Ellis, Mel Gerhold, Hal Holoun, William Henry
Jackson, Keith Jacobshagen, Gerry Metz, Aaron Pyle, and Olaf Wieghorst.
This exhibit at the Great Plains Art Collection, located in 205 Love
Library, is on display through Aug. 30. Pictured above is an untitled
1940 oil painting by Charles Simmons.
