Perlman Elected to National Board
Dean Harvey Perlman of the UNL College of Law began service this summer
as a member of the national board of trustees of the American Inns of
Court.
The American Inns of Court is an organization dedicated to improving the
ethics, skills professionalism and civility of members of the legal
profession.
Perlman was elected to a four-year term in nationwide balloting by the
organization's
members.
Perlman has been UNL law dean since 1983. He has written and taught
primarily
in the field of torts and unfair competition.
Established in 1980, the American Inns of Court has more than 270
chapters
(inns) and 18,000 members active in 49 states and the District of
Columbia.
Byrne Honored as Distinguished Alumnus of Idaho State
UNL athletic director Bill Byrne will be honored as Idaho State
University's
distinguished alumnus Oct. 25-26 at the Pocatello school.
Byrne, who has been UNL's athletic director since 1993, earned his
bachelor's
(1967) and master's (1971) degrees at Idaho State. He was director of
alumni
relations at Idaho State from 1971-76, executive director of the
University
of New Mexico Lobo Club from 1976-79, and assistant athletic director at
San Diego State University from 1980-82. He went to the University of
Oregon
as assistant athletic director in 1982, then served as Oregon's athletic
director from 1984 until coming to Nebraska as athletic
director-designate
in 1992.
He was president of the National Association of Athletic Directors in
1991-92
and is in his fifth year on that organization's executive committee. He
has been named national fund-raiser-of-the-year by the National Athletic
Fundraisers.
Plant Pathologist Wins Extension Award
John Watkins, a UNL plant pathologist, has received the 1996 Excellence
in Extension Award from the American Phytopathological Society.
The award was established in 1988 to recognize excellence in extension
plant
pathology. The award was presented at the society's annual meeting in
Indianapolis
July 27-31.
Watkins' main responsibilities have been in the area of small grains,
especially
wheat, forage and pasture grass, turfgrass and ornamentals. He also
serves
as a statewide coordinator for Cooperative Extension plant pathology in
these areas.
CASNR Faculty Members Receive Awards
Faculty members were honored at the College of Agricultural Sciences and
Natural Resources faculty meeting Aug. 22.
Dean Donald Edwards recognized George Pfeiffer, associate professor of
agricultural
economics, as recipient of this year's L.K. Crowe Outstanding
Undergraduate
Student Adviser Award. Betsy Dierberger, assistant instructor in the
Department
of Agronomy, received the CASNR Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award.
Maurice
Baker, professor of agricultural economics, received the award of merit
from the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture
(NACTA).
