'Young Poisoner's Handbook' at Ross Theater
Benjamin Ross' The Young Poisoner's Handbook, opening at the Mary
Riepma Ross Film Theater on Sept. 12 is like a Charles Addams cartoon
directed
by Alfred Hitchcock.
Based on the early-1960s case of Graham Young, a teenager from the London
suburbs who became obsessed with poisoning people, Ross' film seduces us
into viewing the most appalling acts with smirky, jaundiced
detachment.
As Graham, Hugh O'Conor, with his big, dark, unblinking eyes (he looks
like
a handsome owl), almost convinces you that homicide is a reasonable
extension
of adolescent rebelliousness. Also showing is the outrageously witty
animator
Bill Plympton's newest and arguably best work, How to Make Love to a
Woman, providing an eleven-step guide to proper lovemaking etiquette
as only Plympton can deliver: outlandish, sexy and full of cartoon
fun.
The Young Poisoner's Handbook and How to Make Love to a
Woman
are showing on Sept. 12 through Sept. 15 and again on Sept. 18 through
Sept.
21. There is no screening on Sept. 19. Check the Scarlet calendar
for show times.
