'Last Of The One Room Schools' Wins Gabriel Award and Regional
Emmy
Recent national and regional awards have been added to the list of honors
received by Last Of The One Room Schools, a four-part Nebraska ETV
Network miniseries that intimately captures a year-in-the-life of the
seven
students and teacher of Burr Oak School in Custer County, Nebraska, and
explores the past, present and future of one-room schools.
The miniseries received a 1996 Gabriel Award in the category of
"Best
Informational Program. " These prestigious awards are presented
nationally
by Unda-USA (the National Catholic Association for professional
communicators)
in recognition of programming that "serves, enriches and challenges
audiences. "
Last Of The One Room Schools also received a Heartland Regional
Emmy
Award in the category of "Best Documentary: Artistic or Cultural,
"
from the Heartland Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and
Sciences.
Previous awards include a CINE Golden Eagle Award, presented by the
Council
on International Non-Theatrical Events, which is an indicator of a
production's
ability to compete in international competitions. Last Of The One Room
Schools was distributed nationwide by PBS.
Joel Geyer was producer/director of the series, with Perry Stoner as
videographer/editor
and Mike Wieser as audio technician. Tom Larson and Steve Hanson composed
the original music. The series was underwritten in part by Nebraskans for
Public Television and the Nebraska Humanities Council.
