UNL Agronomist to be Honored for Soybean Research

James Specht, longtime professor of agronomy at UNL, will be nationally recognized for his work in soybean production research during the Commodity Classic soybean and corn exposition Feb. 25-27 in Phoenix. The United Soybean Board will present Specht with their Soybean Production Research Award for his pioneering work in crop physiology and plant genetics.

"Nebraska producers have been very fortunate to have the benefit of Specht's research expertise at work for them at the university," said Jerry Haertel, chairman of the Nebraska Soybean Board. "Under his tutelage, the Agronomy Department at UNL has developed numerous improved soybean varieties that have been specifically adapted to our state's environment."

Specht, who has worked at the University of Nebraska since 1974, has made significant contributions nationwide in the area of yield-water relationships for soybeans.

In 1994, Specht received the Agronomic Crop Achievement Award bestowed upon him by his peers in the scientific community for his contributions to soybean research.

He continues to consult with soybean producers in the state on soybean production situations and serves as a liaison between the Nebraska Soybean Board and the University of Nebraska Agronomy Department.
