Tadros Receives 1997 T.Y. Lin Award
Maher Tadros, Cheryl Prewett Professor of Civil Engineering, received the
1997 T.Y. Lin Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers for
writing
the best design paper in the field of prestressed concrete.
The paper, titled "Behavior and Design of Double Tees with Web
Openings,"
was published in the January-February 1996 issue of PCI Journal. Tadros
shared the award with co-authors John Savage, Larry Fischer and Panchy
Samy.
The T.Y. Lin Award is given to authors for papers written by members of
ASCE and its student chapters.
Tadros' design paper proved that double tees, the most popular precast
prestressed
concrete product, can be penetrated with a very large number of web
openings
without reducing structural capacity. The introduction of web openings
allows
for reduced member weight and reduced overall floor-to-floor height in a
multistory structure.
The award will be presented to Tadros and his co-authors April 15 at the
ASCE Structures Congress in Portland, Ore.
