Omtvedt Named to Nebraska Hall of Ag Achievement
Irvin "Irv" Omtvedt, vice chancellor for the University of
Nebraska's
Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, has been named the
Nebraska
Hall of Agricultural Achievement's 102nd honoree.
Omtvedt was selected for his contributions to improving Nebraska's
agricultural
industry, said Dave McGill, Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement
secretary.
"He does a great job in getting people to work together,"
McGill
said. "He has encouraged teams from different disciplines to
cooperate
in research efforts."
Omtvedt and nine newly elected Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement
members will be recognized April 11 at a dinner at the Clifford Hardin
Nebraska
Center for Continuing Education. The organization, founded in 1916,
honors
Nebraskans' contributions to agriculture.
Chuck Schroeder, chief executive officer of the National Cattlemen's Beef
Association and former NU Foundation vice president, will present
Omtvedt's
tribute.
Omtvedt also is vice president for agriculture and natural resources for
the NU system and has served since July 1996 as UNL's interim senior vice
chancellor for academic affairs.
New Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement members are P. Stephen
Baenziger
of Lincoln, former chaired of UNL's agronomy department where he is a
Eugene
W. Price distinguished professor of agronomy; Ronald G. Bishop of Grand
Island, general manager of the Central Platte Natural Resources District;
Ted H. Doane of Waverly, UNL animal science emeritus professor; James L.
Girardin of Broken Bow, owner/operator of Arrow Seed Co.; Larry Hudkins
of Malcolm, a National Cattlemen's Beef Association director and former
Nebraska Cattlemen president; James A. Irwin of Alliance, a pioneer of
energy
and water conservation practices on his irrigated farm; Steve Oltmans of
Omaha, general manager of the Papio-Missouri Natural Resources District;
Doris Royal of Springfield, a farmer who is credited with helping make
estate and inheritance tax laws fairer to surviving spouses; and Clifford
Walker of Scottsbluff, farmer and a leader in Nebraska's dry bean seed
production.
The banquet is open to the public. The deadline for reservations, which
