Omtvedt Named to Nebraska Hall of Ag Achievement

Irvin "Irv" Omtvedt, vice chancellor for the University of Nebraska's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, has been named the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement's 102nd honoree.

Omtvedt was selected for his contributions to improving Nebraska's agricultural industry, said Dave McGill, Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement secretary.
"He does a great job in getting people to work together," McGill said. "He has encouraged teams from different disciplines to cooperate in research efforts."

Omtvedt and nine newly elected Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement members will be recognized April 11 at a dinner at the Clifford Hardin Nebraska Center for Continuing Education. The organization, founded in 1916, honors Nebraskans' contributions to agriculture.

Chuck Schroeder, chief executive officer of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and former NU Foundation vice president, will present Omtvedt's tribute.

Omtvedt also is vice president for agriculture and natural resources for the NU system and has served since July 1996 as UNL's interim senior vice chancellor for academic affairs.

New Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement members are P. Stephen Baenziger of Lincoln, former chaired of UNL's agronomy department where he is a Eugene W. Price distinguished professor of agronomy; Ronald G. Bishop of Grand Island, general manager of the Central Platte Natural Resources District; Ted H. Doane of Waverly, UNL animal science emeritus professor; James L. Girardin of Broken Bow, owner/operator of Arrow Seed Co.; Larry Hudkins of Malcolm, a National Cattlemen's Beef Association director and former Nebraska Cattlemen president; James A. Irwin of Alliance, a pioneer of energy and water conservation practices on his irrigated farm; Steve Oltmans of Omaha, general manager of the Papio-Missouri Natural Resources District; Doris Royal of Springfield, a farmer who is credited with helping make estate and inheritance tax laws fairer to surviving spouses; and Clifford Walker of Scottsbluff, farmer and a leader in Nebraska's dry bean seed production.

The banquet is open to the public. The deadline for reservations, which cost $20 each, is April 7. Checks should be sent to the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement, P.O. Box 830708, Lincoln, NE 68583-0708. For information, call Linda Arnold at 472-3802.
