Engineers Garner Bridge Award

A College of Engineering and Technology bridge project won the Grand Award in the American Consulting Engineers Council of Nebraska's 1997 engineering excellence awards competition.

The bridge, at 120th Street and Giles Road in Sarpy County, was completed in June 1996 as the nation's first high-performance concrete bridge. The three-span 225-foot structure uses concrete strengths of 8,000 pounds per square inch for the deck and 12,000 pounds per square inch for the prestressed girders. These values are roughly double those of conventional concrete bridges.

Professors Maher Tadros, Amin Einea and Atorod Azizinamini worked on the research for the bridge. The research was sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, the Nebraska Department of Roads and the UNL Center for Infrastructure Research. Local industry participants included Wilson Concrete, Hawkins Construction, Ready Mixed Concrete and the Schemmer Associates.

O'Hanlon to Receive Alumni Award

Twelve University of Nebraska alumni, including James O'Hanlon, dean of Teachers College, will receive Alumni Achievement Awards during an April 26 banquet at the Nebraska Union. The banquet is in conjunction with the Nebraska Alumni Association reunions for the classes of 1947 and 1957.

O'Hanlon has served as dean since 1982, and formerly was director of the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. O'Hanlon received a Distinguished Teaching Award in 1972 and was president of the faculty senate in 1981. This year he steps down as the university's institutional representative to the NCAA, a position he has held since 1983. A native of Blair, O'Hanlon serves on the boards of directors of the National Arbor Day Foundation and the Lincoln Orchestra Association and is a member of the Lincoln Community Concert Band.

Satellite Crew Earns Performance Award

The satellite operations center at Nebraska Educational Telecommunications has earned the prestigious "Uplinker of the Year Award" from Skynet Satellite Services, which operates communication satellites for AT&T Corp.

The award recognized NET for a perfect record in accessing AT&T satellites, says Roger Bartlett, NET's assistant director of engineering for satellite operations. NET's record stands out because errors in accessing satellites can interfere with other satellite users. Members of the satellite operations center staff are Ray Abbruzzese, Kent Baker, Ron Ladd, Bill Mohler, Darrell Schweppe and David Stewart.
