Families Needed to Host Japanese Exchange Students
Nebraska families are needed to host eight Japanese boys participating in
a Cooperative Extension 4-H exchange program July 28-Aug. 22.
"We are in the process of selecting families who would be interested
in having an educational and international experience in their home this
summer," said Bill Caldwell, 4-H international coordinator at the
University
of Nebraska.
For 25 years LABO, a Japanese youth organization, has had a reciprocal
exchange
with 4-H in emphasizing cultural education and learning English.
The boys are ages 12-15. Prospective host families must have a boy within
2 years of age of the visiting youth.
Families interested in serving as hosts should contact Caldwell as soon

Fiscal Year 1996-97 Cut Off Dates Announced
Purchase orders must be written by June 30 to encumber funds prior to the
end of the fiscal year. Requisitions for items requiring bidding
procedures
must be received in Purchasing by June 21, to allow time to complete the
bid process and ensure that funds will be encumbered and/or carried
forward.
Requisitions for items requiring vendor quotations must be received in
the
Purchasing Department by June 9. Requisitions for items not requiring the
bidding or quotation process must be received by June 23 to allow for
purchase
order writing. Also, please remember, verbal purchase orders do not
encumber
funds. Any outstanding paperwork on phone/verbal purchase orders should
be processed within the same time frames as listed above.
It is also important to forward the copies of the Quick Order/Quick Pay
documents designated "Accounting Copy" directly to Accounting
to avoid delay in recording and processing.
All Purchasing Card (MasterCard) transactions made during June, must be
reconciled by June 30, to appear on the June, 1997 Ledger. All remaining
transactions for June purchases must be reconciled by July 16. Any other
remaining June, 1997, transactions will be posted to the July 1997
Ledger.
Requisitions for University Stores' merchandise must be received by June
23. To avoid confusion and ensure accuracy, please note the fiscal year
preference on requisitions forwarded to Stores during the month of June.
Orders that should be charged to the FY 97-98 budget will be charged and
delivered after July 1.
The last day for ordering merchandise from VWR, Sigma, and Boise Cascade
is 4 p.m. on June 25. Any merchandise ordered after 4 p.m. will be posted
to July, 1997 business.
Blanket Order Renewals
Requisitions for renewal of blanket orders for FY 97-98 have been sent to
departments. If the blanket order is not to be renewed for FY 97-98,
please
mark CANCELLED across the face of the requisition and return it to the
Purchasing
Department.
Please review and make any necessary changes. Return the signed original
to the Purchasing Department as soon as possible (keep a copy for
departmental
records).
Please remember - you cannot make equipment purchases on blanket
orders.
Additional Year End Information can be found on the following web
sites:

Blanket Travel Authorizations
Requests for blanket travel authorizations for FY 97-98, must be
submitted
directly to the Accounting Office prior to June 30, 1997. A blanket
travel
authorization covers all in-state travel by departmental personnel for
the
entire fiscal year.
In the past, the Accounting Department has required an annual renewal of
departmental blanket authorizations, including a list of approved
travelers
and company/centers. Effective with the annual renewal process for
1997-98,
the Accounting Department will be assigning departments a
"perpetual"
travel authorization number that will not require future renewal.
Accounting is also discontinuing the requirement for a list of approved
travelers and company/centers on blanket authorizations. When an Employee
Expense Voucher for in-state travel is received by the Accounting
Department,
they will accept the dean/director/chairperson approval signature as an
indication that the employee was authorized to travel and that the source
of funding is valid.
When annual blanket travel authorization renewals are submitted this
year,
they will be given a four-digit number. The first three digits will be
the
department number and the fourth digit will indicate any desired division
within the department. These authorization numbers should be included on
all Employee Expense Vouchers for in-state travel that occurs on or after
July 1, 1997. If you have any questions about the assignment of these
numbers,
contact Eva Bass at 472-8642.
"Backyard Farmer" Program Launches Internet Video
Nebraska's oldest gardening show is using Internet technology to
cultivate
knowledge among green-thumbed Cornhuskers.
Night or day, "Backyard Farmer" fans can watch video from the
Nebraska Educational Television program on the World Wide Web via
computer,
said Jim Randall, communications specialist for the University of
Nebraska's
Communications and Information Technology unit.
Recent advancements in the technology that runs video on computers have
made posting video on the web more feasible, said Randall, executive
producer
of "Backyard Farmer" for NU's Institute of Agriculture and
Natural
Resources.
Viewing "Backyard Farmer" video posted on the web requires: a
computer, a modem that connects to the Internet at 28.8 bits per second
or faster and Real Video software. The software is available free on the
Internet at IANR's "Backyard Farmer" video web site, Randall
said.
"Backyard Farmer" airs Tuesdays at 7 p.m. through Aug. 26.
Video
clips from each show, such as the "Landscaping, Nebraska Style"
segments airing this year, will be posted on the web site by 10 a.m. the
next day and archived for future reference, Randall said.
The video segments can be viewed at this web address: http://byf.unl.edu.
IANR staff developed Internet access to "Backyard Farmer" video
segments as a service to the program's viewers, Randall said. Posting the
video clips on the web enhances NU's "multi-media approach to
learning
about gardening," he said.
The "Backyard Farmer" video web site is a gateway for gardening
enthusiasts to reach other information, Randall said.
For example, computer users can access gardening tips from NU Cooperative
Extension publications. Another mouse click links them to "Backyard
Farmer" information that Nebraska Educational Television posts on
the
web such as: the NU Cooperative Extension panelists' biographies, a
gardener's
calendar, Plant of the Week, plus Nebraska and Internet gardening
resources.
"Backyard Farmer" is a cooperative effort of IANR and the
Nebraska
Educational Telecommunications Commission.

Roger Welsch to Visit with UNL's Kuzelka
Bob Kuzelka, assistant to the director of the Water Center/Environmental
Programs at UNL, is the guest on Roger Welsch &, at 8:30 p.m.
June 13 on the statewide Nebraska ETV Network.
Welsch notes that, "It's always puzzled me why Nebraska was once
thought
of as being part of the Great American Desert. After all, we have the
Platte
and Missouri Rivers, we're sitting on one of the world's largest
underground
water systems and the word Nebraska comes from the Indian phrase for flat
water. Water is one of Nebraska's most important resources, next only to
its people and its soil. Bob Kuzelka devotes much of his life and energy
to this resource, and we'll find out what he has to say about it this
week."
Joel Sartore, contract photographer for National Geographic magazine, is
the guest on Roger Welsch &, at 8:30 p.m. June 20.
For complete listings of Nebraska ETV programming, check out their
website
