McAuliffe Prize Nominations Sought

Teachers College is seeking nominations for the 1998 Christa McAuliffe Prize.

The prize has been awarded annually since 1987 to a Nebraska elementary or secondary school teacher in memory of McAuliffe, the teacher-astronaut who died in the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger Jan. 28, 1986. The recipient will be honored at a banquet in late January 1998 and will receive a $1,000 stipend and specially designed plaque.

A letter of nomination should address how the nominated teacher exemplifies McAuliffe's personal attributes of courage, commitment to excellence, creativity, and ability to inspire. Nomination letters are due Oct. 31 and should be accompanied by the nominee's resume, a statement of the nominee's philosophy of teaching, a statement from the nominator on the way in which the nominee exemplifies McAuliffe's personal attributes and as many as eight letters of support from students, parents, administrators, fellow teachers and community members.

Nomination materials should be sent to the Office of the Dean of Teachers College, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, P.O. Box 880234, 231 Mabel Lee Hall, Lincoln, NE 68588-0234.

Quilt Center Tours Set Are Afternoon of Aug. 30

Anyone seeking a quiet spot away from the Cornhuskers' football season opener or a cooler spot away from the Nebraska State Fair on Aug. 30 might try checking out the state-of-the-art quilt storage area built for the James Quilt Collection on the East Campus.

The first public tours of the facility are scheduled from 1-4 p.m. that day on the second floor of the Home Economics Building on UNL's East Campus.

Patricia Cox Crews, professor of textiles, clothing and design, said tours will start on the hour and half-hour. She said a few quilts from the $6 million James Collection will also be available for public viewing.

Ardis and Robert James of Chappaqua, N.Y., donated their collection of approximately 950 antique and contemporary quilts to UNL earlier this year. They also gave a $1 million endowed gift to the University of Nebraska Foundation to establish an International Quilt Study Center at UNL. Crews is the center's first director.

Big Red Wrap-Up Kicks Off New Season on Nebraska ETV

As the University of Nebraska-Lincoln football juggernaut looks to regain its national championship form this season, Big Red Wrap-Up will again be in the center of the action. The state's only live television call-in Big Red football show returns to the Nebraska ETV Network with highlights and commentary on Sept. 2, at 7 p.m.

The series, hosted by sportscaster Bill Doleman, is a combination of highlights from every Big Red match-up at home and on the road, coverage of the coaches' weekly press conferences, analysis with Nebraska sportswriters, appearances by special guests and questions and comments from viewers across the state. (Viewers can call 472-1212 in Lincoln or 1-800-676-5445 outside of Lincoln.)

On the first show of the season, Doleman welcomes Omaha World-Herald sportswriter Lee Barfknecht and Lincoln Journal Star sportswriter Ken Hambleton to review the season opener with the Akron Zips. The series is closed captioned for hearing-impaired viewers.

This year, Big Red fans will again have a chance to display their loyalty with the third annual "Why I'm a Husker Hotshot Contest!" Viewers are invited to express their support for the Huskers in a 150-word essay and send it to "Husker Hotshot Contest!" at Box 83111, Lincoln NE 68501 or through e-mail at net@unl.edu. Entries should be postmarked on or before Oct. 31. The winner will appear on Big Red Wrap-Up Nov. 18.

Big Red Wrap-Up airs live Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. following every Big Red football game. The series is underwritten in part by the Nebraska Bankers Association, and is a production of the Sports and Special Events Unit of UNL Television for broadcast on the statewide Nebraska ETV Network. Steve Alvis is senior producer, Jim Carmichael is producer/director and Martha Florence is associate producer/director.

The Nebraska ETV Network and EduCable are services of Nebraska Educational Telecommunications. The complete program schedule for Nebraska ETV is available on NET's World Wide Web site, http://net.unl.edu.

Public Television Salutes Hispanic Heritage Month

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Nebraska ETV Network and EduCable, its cable service, will broadcast a variety of programs that focus on the history, harmonies and heritage of the Hispanic experience. They are:

One-Hour Delay Goes Away For Mountain Time Nebraska ETV Viewers

Beginning Sept. l, the Nebraska ETV Network will eliminate the one-hour delay of programs broadcast from KTNE-TV Channel 13 in Alliance.

Currently, broadcasts from Channel 13 are delayed for one hour so that viewers in the Mountain Time Zone can watch Network programs at the same local time as viewers in the Central Time Zone. For example, Nebraska ETV viewers see The Newshour With Jim Lehrer on weekdays at 6 p.m. local time regardless of whether they live in Omaha or Alliance.

Eliminating the delay means that most Nebraska ETV programs will be seen an hour earlier in the Alliance area. Beginning Sept. 1, for example, Alliance viewers will see The Newshour at 5 p.m. Mountain Time instead of 6 p.m. Mountain Time.
