A day of fascinating commentary and superb musicianship is in store for music lovers when internationally acclaimed violinist Itzhak Perlman joins Nebraska Public Radio Network music coordinator Chris Kohtz and KVNO-Omaha music director Bill Jenks for an all-day Perlman broadcast on NPRN and KVNO. The special will air statewide from 9 to 11:45 a.m. and 1 to 4:45 p.m. Sept. 9.
Perlman chose the music for this day-long program. Listen for his selections interspersed with his personal observations and in-depth interviews. The program will showcase everything from the superstars recent interest in klezmer music performance to his experiments with jazz and movie music, with plenty of classical music performances thrown in for good measure.
Born in Israel in 1945, Perlman completed his initial training at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv. Soon after arriving in New York in 1958, the young musician was propelled into the spotlight with an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. In 1964, following his studies at the Juilliard School, Perlman won the prestigious Leventritt Competition, thereby launching his spectacular career. Since then, he has appeared with virtually every major orchestra in the world, and has become involved in a large number of humanitarian causes.
"Mr. Perlman is widely regarded as the most exquisite instrumentalist in the world, so having him as our guest on this all-day broadcast will be a marvelous treat for our statewide listeners," says NPRN General Manager Steve Robinson. "I'm also delighted that our colleagues at KVNO in Omaha are sharing in this special day. It presages more collaborations between our two organizations."
The all-day event is a prelude to Perlman's live performance at the Lied Center for Performing Arts on Sept. 14, with the Omaha Symphony.
The Nebraska Public Radio Network is a service of Nebraska Educational Telecommunications. The complete program schedule for NPRN is available on NET's World Wide Web site, http://net.unl.edu.
