UNL on Hispanic Magazine's 'Hot' List of Universities

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln was one of 700 colleges and universities nationwide to be named to Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine's "HOT" list of institutions that offer "outstanding opportunities to Hispanic students."

The magazine surveyed the literature and catalogues of more than 2,500 institutions before arriving at its "HOT" list - for Hispanic Outlook Tops.

Jose Lopez-Isa, publisher of the magazine, wrote that the institutions were reviewed for financial aid, scholarships, remedial programs, English as a Second Language, tutoring, mentoring, Hispanic studies departments, Hispanic campus organizations, Hispanic faculty and administrators and other services that are designed to help Hispanic students succeed.

UNL was one of four institutions in Nebraska to be listed. The others were the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Creighton University and Western Nebraska Community College.

Price to Serve on NIH Study Section

Carolyn Price, associate professor of chemistry, has accepted an invitation to serve as a member of the Molecular Cytology Study Section, Division of Research Grants, at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

Members of NIH study sections are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline. Cytology is a branch of biology dealing with the structure, function, multiplication, pathology and life history of cells.

Price's term on the NIH study section runs through June 30, 2000. She has been a member of the UNL faculty since 1988.

Roadside Safety Facility Receives Award

The university's Midwest Roadside Safety Facility received the Federal Highway Administration's Region 7 Administrator's Safety Award in December.

The award recognized the facility's "Midwest States Pooled Fund Crash Test Program" for its contributions to improve the safety of roadside features to save human lives, reduce suffering and crash costs and improve highway operations. It specifically cited the contributions of the late Ed Post, founder and former director of the facility; Dean Sicking, current director of the facility; Milo Cress of the Federal Highway Administration's Nebraska Division; and the research staff at the Nebraska Department of Roads.

"It should be noted that this regional safety award is made only intermittently and only for truly outstanding safety programs and individuals," said Arthur E. Hamilton, regional highway administrator for the Federal Highway Administration.

Lange is a 1985 graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Law, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif. She has been the college's assistant dean for alumni development since 1989.
