Dora Dill Wins UNOPA's Oldt Awards

Dora Dill, (shown at right), an administrative technician in the Agricultural Research Division won both annual awards presented by the University of Nebraska Office Personnel Association on April 14.

Dill received both the Floyd S. Oldt Silver Pen Award and the Floyd S. Oldt Outstanding Staff Award. Cathy Paus, staff secretary II for the South Central Research and Extension Center, was also nominated for the Floyd S. Oldt Outstanding Staff Award.

McBride, Hull Honored by D.C. Group

The Nebraska Society of Washington, D.C., honored Jack McBride and Ron Hull at its 35th annual Distinguished Nebraskan Award Dinner. The group cited them for leadership in building Nebraska's and the nation's educational television system.

McBride retired as general manager of Nebraska Educational Telecommunications in July 1996 after 42 years of working for the state's public television and telecommunications systems. From its meager start in 1953 as the nation's seventh public television station, McBride has built KUON-TV into the flagship station of a nine-station network with 250 employees and a $22 million annual budget.

Hull began working for KUON-TV in 1955 as a producer and director. He later became program manager, helping to develop and create the programming that defined the network. He built on a strong base of local programming - locally produced programs as well as programs with local subject interest. And he put Nebraska on the map with projects of national significance.

The award honors Nebraskans who have contributed to the benefit of the state or nation. Past recipients include Tom Osborne, former head football coach.

Laging Earns AIA Fellowship Status

Thomas Laging, professor of architecture, has been inducted into the College of Fellows in the American Institute of Architects.

Fellowship is conferred on architects who have made significant contributions to the profession in education, practice, leadership or public service. Out of a membership of more than 59,000, fewer than 2,300 AIA members are distinguished with the honor of fellowship.

A specialist in urban design, Laging has taught in the College of Architecture since 1967. He was recognized for his contributions to AIA's nationally recognized R/UDAT program, which has offered planning and urban design assistance to more than 120 cities around the country.

Through the college, Laging established and contributed to a statewide design assistance program that stimulated planning activity in several Nebraska communities. He also is noted nationally for his work on the Nebraska State Capitol and Environs Plan.

Laging will be invested into the College of Fellows May 15 at the 1998 AIA national convention in San Francisco.

Uerling Named to Planning Board of Governors

Don Uerling, associate professor of educational administration at Teachers College, has been appointed to the board of governors for the Midwest Great Lake region of the Council of Educational Facility Planners, an organization that provides information and advice on educational facility construction to colleges, universities and elementary and secondary schools.

Nebraska Nightly Wins Top AP Awards

The Nebraska Public Radio Network's news and public affairs series Nebraska Nightly took three top honors at the Associated Press News Broadcasters Awards banquet April 4.

This year NPRN competed in Division I, which consists of stations in Omaha and Lincoln. Out of the nine categories for which awards were given, Nebraska Nightly won three first-place prizes. Associate producer Keith Ludden won first place in the features and natural sound categories. Carolyn Johnsen, also a Nebraska Nightly associate producer, captured the award in the agriculture category. Johnsen also received an honorable mention in the natural sound competition.

"These awards are the result of a team effort," says Nancy Finken, Nebraska Nightly producer, "with great thanks going to Jeff Smith and Donnie Robertson for their consistently superb engineering work."

Service Awards

NU's 1998 Service Awards to Honor 843 Employees

On April 28, Nebraska employees will be honored with service awards at an event hosted by Chancellor James Moeser at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. The Service Awards event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with refreshments being served prior to a formal program with Richard Alloway as Master of Ceremonies.

Those whose names are not included on this list but who believe they are eligible for an award should contact Michele Strickler. Also, if you have any questions about the awards program call Michele at 472-3101.

Congratulations to the 843 University of Nebraska employees who will reach a service anniversary during the 1998 calendar year.
