TWO HOUSES SO DILAPIDATED that even Norm Abrams would throw up his hands bit the dust in late July at the corner of 18th & R.

Nebraska ETV Program Examines State's Wartime Contribution

The many roles that Nebraskans played during World War II - on both the frontlines and the home front - are examined in "The War Comes to Nebraska," a 90-minute documentary airing at 7 p.m. Aug. 19 on the statewide Nebraska ETV Network.

Because Nebraska's inland location offered protection from bombing raids, it was home to 11 air bases, three ordnance plants and factories that built thousands of aircraft. The two specially modified B-29 Superfortresses that dropped atomic bombs on Japan - Enola Gay and Bock's Car - were built at the Martin bomber plant in Omaha.

Nebraska offered respite to more than 6 million U.S. service men and women interrupted transcontinental rail journeys who stopped at North Platte's canteen. Meanwhile, thousands of enemy soldiers, sailors and flyers were interned at 24 Nebraska P.O.W. camps.

Nebraska Lands EPSCOR Grants

The EPSCOR program was among a handful of similar programs in other states to land significant grants from the U.S. Department of Defense.

The grants, which total more than $1.85 million, were awarded to six research teams from several university departments. Winning projects follow:

EPSCOR is the National Science Foundation's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research. EPSCOR is restricted to those states that have historically received lesser amounts of federal research and development funding and have demonstrated a commitment to develop their research bases and to improve the quality of science and engineering research conducted at their universities and colleges. Nebraska is one of 18 EPSCOR states.

Sinatra Remembered on Nebraska ETV Special

Frank Sinatra has long been acclaimed as the world's leading performer of popular music, the artist who set the mold for all others to fill. For Sinatra, the 1960s and '70s were very good years indeed, as so many of his classic television music specials attest.

Now those specials provide the magic for "Frank Sinatra: The Very Good Years" on Great Performances, airing Saturday, Aug. 15, at 8:10 p.m. on the Nebraska ETV Network.

Sinatra was, of course, more than a singer. He was also an actor, recording artist, cabaret and concert star, radio and television personality and, on occasion, a producer, director and conductor. His career, which included acting roles in more than 50 films, some of which he produced and directed, was studded with accolades: Oscars, Grammys, Emmys, Peabody Awards. A dedicated humanitarian, he had received numerous honors and awards in appreciation for his charitable endeavors.

During his remarkable career, he acquired such famous nicknames as "The Chairman of the Board," "The Voice," the "Greatest Roman of Them All" and, of course, as virtually the entire world knew him, "Ol' Blue Eyes."

Culled from 13 remarkable telecasts from the period, the Great Performances special offers a fitting lyrical tribute to the "Chairman of the Board."

Guest artists appearing with Sinatra on this musical compilation of television specials include Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Kelly and Jobim.

Frank Sinatra died of a heart attack at the age of 82 this past May.

Husker Football Programs Kick Off 1998 Grid Season

The 1998 college football season begins when Statewide, the Nebraska ETV Network's weekly news magazine, profiles University of Nebraska Assistant Football Coach Ron Brown, followed by "A Day in the Life of Husker Football" on Aug. 14. Statewide, airing at 7 p.m., features a "Perspectives" segment profiling Brown, the Cornhuskers' receivers coach, whose off-the-field activities make him one of the most inspirational leaders of the team. Brown hosts a weekly Christian radio show carried by stations across the state and is a speaker and writer for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Each summer, he runs seven statewide Christian camps for lower income children. He has written one book, Unfinished Business, about the Cornhuskers' 1994 championship season and is the subject of a biography, I Can, by Arthur L. Lindsay.

At 7:30 p.m., "A Day in the Life of Husker Football" follows then-Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne on the practice field, in strategy sessions and at team meetings as he prepares the Cornhuskers for their November 1997 showdown with traditional rival Oklahoma. The program is filled with fascinating scenes from the unlucky graduate assistant who awakens players on game day to Osborne's sideline conversations with players, assistant coaches and officials.

"A Day in the Life of Husker Football" also captures the behind the scenes activities of other participants: the HuskerVision crew, concession workers, the ABC Television Network crew that broadcast the game live, and more.

University to Offer MBA in Agribusiness

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will offer a master of business administration degree with a specialization in agribusiness in a joint project of the College of Business Administration and the department of agricultural economics in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

"There are very few colleges and universities that offer this type of joint degree to their students," said Dennis Conley, professor of agricultural economics and joint agribusiness committee chairperson. "The program of study blends a traditional MBA curriculum with specialized courses in agricultural economics that help prepare graduates to enter middle management positions in the agribusiness industry."

Students will have the benefit of a tradition in agribusiness education that dates to 1983, coupled with an MBA program recently recognized as one of the 13 most efficient programs in the country. Chancellor James Moeser has designated the agribusiness program as one of the university's areas of excellence.

The MBA in agribusiness is for both traditional students and non-traditional students who want master's-level education in business with a specific focus on the food and agricultural sectors of the economy. It is a professional degree designed to serve people working in private industry, government or nonprofit organizations.

Specialty Crops Field Day Aug. 15 in Southeast Nebraska

By Cheryl Alberts, IANR news writer

The third annual Specialty Crops Field Day, highlighting the production and marketing of high-value specialty crops and livestock, is Aug. 15.

"We get questions frequently about what options people have for small acreage production," said Pam Murray, coordinator of the Center for Sustainable Agricultural Systems (CSAS) at the University of Nebraska, one of the field day co-sponsors.

"In many cases people have inherited a small piece of land and would like to fill a niche market, but don't know where to begin. This event will generate some ideas," added the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources staff member.

The day will begin at the Haymarket Farmers Market at noon with a brief overview of the market. Maps and information will be available at the market manager's booth all morning.

The group will meet at the Lancaster County Extension Office, 444 Cherrycreek Rd., at 12:30 for lunch and a presentation on community gardening. Locally-grown salads, fruit, sweet corn and bread will be served. Participants are asked to bring their own sandwiches and drinks.

At 1:30 p.m. the group will depart the extension office for farm tours. Participants must provide their own transportation; carpools may be arranged at the extension office. The tours will include GreenGlade Specialty Goat Milk Products at Martell; and Thao Gardens (vegetable production and marketing) and Bluestem Herb Farm, both at Beatrice.

The Specialty Crops Field Day is co-sponsored by the Nebraska Sustainable Agriculture Society (NSAS), the Haymarket Farmers Market, Lancaster County Cooperative Extension, the CSAS, the Organic Crop Improvement Association Nebraska Chapter #3, and Country Edge.
