Animal Science Faculty LaudedSeveral University of Nebraska animal scientists received national recognition this summer. Mary Beck, professor of animal science, received the Helene Cecil Leadership Award from the Poultry Science Association for developing opportunities for women in poultry science. The award also recognizes her scientific contributions. Three NU animal scientists were honored at the American Society of Animal Science meeting in July. Michael Brumm, professor of animal science, received the group's Animal Management Award for his contributions to swine housing management. Brumm is a researcher and extension swine specialist who works on swine management issues. Merlyn Nielsen, professor of animal science, won the Animal Breeding and Genetics Award, which recognizes his genetics research program. He studies genetic variation and energy use in animal reproduction. L. Dale Van Vleck, professor of animal science and U.S. Department of Agriculture research geneticist, was named an ASAS Fellow for his successful career. He has studied milk production in dairy cows and reproduction and growth in beef cattle and sheep. Don Beermann, head of NU's animal science department, became the organization's president for the coming year. He succeeded Terry Klopfenstein, professor of animal science. In June, Chris Calkins, professor of animal science, received the American Meat Association's Signal Service Award. The association's oldest award honors members for service and contributions to the meat industry and the organization. Calkins' most recent research includes studying factors influencing beef tenderness. HRFS Makes New AppointmentsThe College of Human Resources and Family Sciences has made two new administrative appointments. Fayrene Hamouz, associate professor in nutritional science and dietetics, has been named interim assistant dean for undergraduate studies, replacing Bill Meredith. She will have office hours on both the UNL and UNO campuses. Julie Johnson, professor in family and consumer sciences, has been
named
acting department chair in family and consumer sciences. Johnson will be
assume responsibilities for Shirley Baugher, who has accepted an
international
assignment with the Mid-America International Agricultural Consortium,
Inc.
(MIAC) and will be doing collaborative work with educational institutions
in Mexico. |
