Beyke and Tallon Receive October Kudos

Marlene Beyke and Terry Tallon received the University Kudos Award at the Oct. 1 meeting of the NU Regents.

Beyke is director of development for the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska. With the university since 1990, she serves as a resource person to the executive officers of ASUN and administrative assistant to the president. She is the adviser for the executive committee, Committee for Fees Allocation, the Homecoming Steering Committee, the Electoral Commission, and other ASUN meetings. She formulates the annual ASUN budget and monitors budget expenditures. She also serves as the clerk of the Student Court and a resource for all officers of the UNL student government.

Her nominator says, "she is one of the most passionate advocates for students I have worked with during my college career."

Tallon is payroll director in Fiscal Affairs. He has been with the university since 1965.

Tallon has provided leadership for all NU campuses in many payroll-related areas, including system implementation, non-resident alien payroll processing and employee direct deposit and payroll deduction capabilities.

During the past two years, Tallon and his colleagues from other campuses have been reviewing, developing specifications, testing and developing training for the change to the SAP enterprise financial management and human resource system. Also during this time Tallon's support staff has undergone a complete turnover.

"The ability to undertake so many changes and innovations during a time when the new supporting cast requires a significant training and supervision is truly a testament to Terry's character and dedication to this institution," says his nominator.

Barkley Professor Hiskey Memorialized

A wooden bench in honor of Marshall Hiskey, longtime NU faculty member who started the university's first program in special education, was dedicated Oct. 27 in front of the Barkley Memorial Center on NU's East Campus.

Hiskey, who retired from the university in 1974, died Dec. 23, 1998, at the age of 90.

Hiskey initiated the university's first comprehensive program in special education, a field that previously was approached only in a non-integrated manner.
