Campus Evergreens Protected

With the holiday season approaching, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Landscape Services is again protecting the campus evergreens with a coating of fox urine to deter any would-be Christmas tree poachers. Fox urine is safe, organic and really, really stinky inside a warm house. Whooooo-eeee! Please enjoy the trees outdoors where they belong.

Mail Services Requests Employees Cancel Catalogs Scripts

Mail Services really needs your help! With the holiday season upon us, Mail and Distribution Services is beginning to be inundated with gurney after gurney, filled with thousands of catalogs.

If you would be so kind as to contact these companies and ask them to send catalogs to your home address (and remove your campus address from their mailing list), this would be an immense help to the mail folks at 1820 R St.

This has caused some disruptions and challenges in service levels. Expectations are to have service levels back to normal within the next 10 to 15 days - while the warehouse conversion is anticipated to be fully completed in 30 days. If you have experienced any problems, please contact Office Depot at 800-392-4777 to resolve any shipping errors.

Please direct all other questions concerning this program to Roger Spiehs, 472-5741.

Federal Regs Govern Mailing of Dangerous Materials

Shipping dangerous goods/hazardous materials is not the same as sending an ordinary package-it requires training and adherence to federal regulatory guidelines. Procedures for the mailing of dangerous goods/hazardous materials (DG/HM) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have now been finalized. It is imperative that no one package, label, or otherwise, offer a DG/HM for transport, regardless of quantity, without having had documented training. To do so, violates regulatory requirements and could result in fines from the Department of Transportation and/or Federal Aviation Administration, and possible loss of service from UNL's expedited delivery vendors.

EHS offered departments the option of sending employees to one of three training sessions offered by an external consultant during August/September, 1999. Those individuals who attended the training and passed the associated exam are now "designated shippers." Only "designated shippers" are authorized to ship DG/HM from the University. For your reference, a list of the trained "designated shippers" may be obtained by contacting EHS at 472-4925. All other individuals and/or departments that have a need to ship such materials must do so through Mail and Distribution Services at 1820 R Street.

So, how do you mail DG/HMs? The first step is to plan ahead - give yourself as much time as possible to send the package. Below is a description of how to arrange for shipment of a DG/HM through Mail and Distribution Services:

o All DG/HM must be delivered to Mail and Distribution Services for proper packaging, labeling, and completion of necessary shipping documents/forms. The courier service cannot deliver these items.

o DG/HM must be accompanied by written information describing the following:

- Name, address, and telephone number of the consignee and consignor.

- Cost Object/WBS Element number to be charged for shipment and packaging costs.

- Full description of all constituents in the package. If chemical in nature, include the proper chemical name and applicable hazard reference information (i.e., material safety data sheets). If it is a mixture of chemicals, include the proper chemical name of all components in the mixture and the percentage of each.

- Requested date of shipment from UNL and type of service requested (e.g., overnight, 2-day air, 3-day ground, etc.). In most cases, DB/HM received at Mail and Distribution Services before noon will be shipped the next day.

- Description of all special packaging requirements that do not evolve from regulatory requirements. For example, instructions to ship on dry ice, if necessary, to preserve the integrity of the item.

Shipping dangerous goods/hazardous materials is a complex process. Please direct questions pertaining to training to Brenda Osthus, director of Environmental Health and Safety, 472-4925. Direct questions related to shipping to Dick Schenaman, manager of Mail and Distribution Services, 472-7029.
