Security Tools

This is a list of some tools that are available to help keep your computer safe. There are many more than are listed here, but these are some of the more popular ones and ones that are available for free or a very reasonable price.

AntiVirus Tools - Make sure to set your AntiVirus software to update regularly. New updates come out frequently to protect against the most recent viruses.

Network Associates (McAfee) VirusScan for Windows and Linux, or Virex for Macintosh
    - Free for all UNL students, faculty and staff.

The Stinger tool stand-alone virus removal tool for Windows.

Symantec's Norton Antivirus - Not licensed by UNL, but is a common AntiVirus package and is preferred by some people. Also available for Macintosh

Spyware/Adware detection & removal - Spyware and Adware aren't officially classified as viruses, as they aren't destructive. Some AntiVirus programs are starting to deal with this type of infection, but the tools below still tend to be more thorough. These function much like AntiVirus programs, and users need to use their built-in update function to keep up with the most recent problems.

LavaSoft's AdAware - Free download for personal use, can upgrade to more advanced version. Windows Only.

PepiMK Software's Spybot Search & Destroy - Free download for Windows.

SecureMac's MacScan - Free download for Macintosh only, both OSX and pre-OSX versions. This product is a beta, but is in fairly widespread use.

Personal Firewalls - These programs can be run on your computer to protect it against many of the attacks that are around on the Internet. The basic free firewalls tend to work for the majority of users, but if you want more control of how the firewall is configured, the more advanced ones may be worth the cost. Some Operating Systems, such as Windows 2000 and XP, Mac OSX and Linux have built-in firewalls, but some tend to take a fair amount of effort and/or knowledge to configure properly.

ZoneLabs' ZoneAlarm (Windows)- Basic version is free, 2 higher-end options with free trial downloads.

Sygate Personal Firewall (Windows)- Basic version is free, higher-end option with free trial download.

McAfee Personal Firewall Plus - Commercial personal firewall software.

Symantec's Norton Personal Firewall - Commercial personal firewall software. Also have a Macintosh version.

Sustainable Softworks' IPNetSentry - Commercial personal firewall software for pre-OSX Macintosh.
