| Since 1993, the program in Severe Disabilities at UNL has been directed by Dr. Ellin Siegel. This program provides specialized course work that can lead to a teaching endorsement (Preschool- 21 years) in Special Education as well as Masters and Doctoral degrees. The course work in Severe Disabilities has been updated to reflect current trends and best practices in the field of Special Education. Dr. Siegel's areas of emphasis include communication intervention, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), assessment, and programming within inclusive educational and community settings. The area of severe disabilities comprises a diverse group of individuals who have significant disabilities. The training program at UNL provides knowledge and expertise to work with this heterogeneous group of individuals who may have autism, dual sensory impairments, mental retardation, or multiple intellectual, sensory, physical or health impairments. There is a shortage of trained personnel in this field of study, both in Nebraska and nationally. Individuals interested in graduate course work in the area of severe disabilities and mental retardation have a variety of options from which to select. You can take special education courses and work as a non-degree seeking student before you decide to apply to graduate school. Students are encouraged to meet with the Director of the Severe Disabilities program to help select the most pertinent courses. Individuals can pursue the following:
