Units Covered

COMM 109 is designed to introduce students to the theory and practce of human communicaiton. Accordingly, the course covers a broad range of communicaiton concepts and contexts. The course is divided into eight units of instruction:

Unit I: HUMAN COMMUNICATION & PUBLIC SPEAKING (Chapters 1 & 7)

Unit I explains the nature and process of communication and how communication affects each of us. You will also be introduced to communication in the context of public speaking by learning how to choose an effective speech topic, determining your purpose and analyzing an audience for speaking situations.

Units II & Ill: PUBLIC SPEAKING (Chapters 8, 9,10 & 11)

These two units continue to train you to be an effective speaker in the one-to-many situation. You will learn how to research your subject, organize your materials, use supporting and clarifying materials, develop an introduction and conclusion, and deliver a speech. You will also learn the specifics of writing and evaluating informative Speeches.

Unit IV: HUMAN COMMUNICATION (Chapters 2 & 3)

In this unit you will learn how communication affects our interactions through an understanding of self. You will be familiarized with the perception process, perceptual differences, and the notion of self-concept. This unit helps you understand how personal communication and perceptions influence our communication with others.

Unit V: VERBAL AND NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION (Chapters 4 & 5)

This unit focuses on the nature and importance of language, how it is used in effective communication, how it relates to culture, and how it influences what you say. You will also learn about the role nonverbal communication plays in our communication, how it can affect communication, and how it differs from culture to culture.

Unit VI: LISTENING AND PERSUASION (Chapters 6 & 12)

This unit emphasizes listening and analyzing what you receive. You will learn how to become a more effective listener and respondent to the communication you receive. You will also become familiar with the power of persuasion, learning to write and evaluate effective persuasive Speeches.

Unit VII: INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION (Chapters 13 & 14)

Here you will learn how we establish, maintain1 and end relationships with others. The unit focuses on theories of how relationships are formed, how communication can affect relationships, and what variables characterize and influence our relationships.

UNIT VIII: SMALL GROUP AND INTERVIEWING (Chapters 15 & 16)

In this unit, you will learn how groups function and how groups can be a valuable means for solving problems. Unit VIII also contains important information on employment interviewing-the employment interview section is something that you'll want to read carefully and keep for future reference.
