Grades in COMM 109 are determined by a combination of factors including quizzes, tests, Speeches, written work, and attendance. A complete description of the grading procedures may be found in the "for students" page. However, here is a brief description of how each of the assigments work:

Procedure |
Quizzes |
There are eight quizzes -- one for each unit. Each quiz must be mastered by the students. To master a quiz, students must score a 16/16 (100%). If students score 13 correct or higher, they are able to "justify," or redo, the items that they missed. Students receive the same number of points for mastered quizzes regardless of how many points they initially score on each quiz. |
Test |
There are three "review" tests and a final examination. Review tests are taken following units 3, 6, and 8. The final examination is taken after the third review test. Each review test is worth 60 points and the final is worth 48 points. All students have the opportunity to re-take review tests once during the class period following thier initial try. |
Speeches |
Students prepare and eliver three Speeches in COMM 109. Each speech is worth a possible 20 points. Those scoring below 20 points on their speech have the opportunity to re-give the speech once to improve their grade. |
Written Work |
Students must complete a full content outline for each speech that they present. Outlines are worth 2 points. Students also must fill out a topic approval form for the first and last speech. This is also worth 2 points. |
Attendance |
There are four "required" days throughout the course of the semester. Required days invovle the Supervisory Instructor explaioning the requirements for each speech. Students receive 10 points for attending each required day. If someone "skips" a required day, they lose 10 points for that day and also lose an additional 5 points for not attending all four required days. |
