Job Duties of IAs

As an IA you are probably the most important person contributing to the success of the Communication Studies 109 program. The experiences you receive from participating in this personalizes system of instruction (PSI) will be invaluable. In fact, we bet that being an IA will be one of the best experiences you have during your college career. As an IA you will grade quizzes and tests and also will evaluate speech performances. More importantly, you will become a peer tutor and mentor to approximately 10 students who will depend on you three days a week!
Your major responsibility as an IA is that of a peer tutor. A successful 109 tutor combines the talents of a concerned teacher with that of an organized record keeper. Some of the duties of an IA includes grading, explaining advanced communication concepts to individuals learning them for the first time, and keeping track of student grades. In addition, you will be responsible for identifying problem areas that students may be experiencing and helping them overcome those concerns.
As part of being an IA, you will be required to complete two 3 page papers throughout the course of the semester. The first paper requires you to evaluate and re-write a "bad" full content speech outline. The second allows you to suggest future improvements to the 109 course -- improvements that will be considered by the 109 staff. You are also graded by a supervisory instructor on how well you interact with students and how well you keep track of student grades.
