Beatrice Public Schools (Nebraska).  Beatrice is a rural community with a population of about 13,000 in southeast Nebraska and is about 40 miles directly south of Lincoln, Nebraska. The public schools in Beatrice serve over 2300 students, approximately 24% of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch, reflecting the relatively low socioeconomic level of many similar rural or small town agricultural families.  The special education students in Beatrice represent about 17.4 % (408 students) of the student population with about 18% of those (74 students) identified as having an emotional/behavioral disorder. The Beatrice School District has begun a comprehensive school improvement planning process, including demonstration of the variety of student skills in both academic and behavioral areas.
