Dean, College of Journalism & Mass Communications
University of Nebraska–Lincoln
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is seeking applicants to lead one of the nation's top journalism and mass communications colleges at a time of unprecedented change in the industry. The new dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications will have an extraordinary opportunity to direct the next generation of journalists and strategic communicators and build upon an award-winning program that already utilizes a rigorous mix of professional and academic resources.
The strength of the College is exemplified by the success of its students and its numerous professional partnerships — both domestic and international. The College is one of 11 colleges chosen to be part of the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism and one of six college programs selected as a bureau for ABC News on Campus. Nationally sanctioned by the Accrediting Council on Education and Mass Communications, Nebraska is the only one of the nation's 107 accredited programs this decade that has produced a national Hearst champion in writing, broadcasting and photography. The College also has won numerous national awards for its series of depth reports and documentaries that feature on-the-ground reporting from Cuba, France, Sri Lanka, and South Africa, including a 2008 Robert F. Kennedy Award for a documentary on Germany. Its advertising students regularly make their mark in national competitions and won the regional National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) in 2009. The College offers bachelor's and master's degree programs that prepare students for careers in newspapers, magazines, television, radio, online media, advertising and public relations agencies, corporations and non-profit organizations. The College also offers educational opportunities in Germany, France, Mexico, Kosovo, Kyrgystan, Ethiopia and Bolivia, and its students consistently are chosen for internships with prominent news and advertising organizations as well as innovative entities within New Media.
The new dean will enjoy the advantages of a growing endowment, a modern building with full technical facilities, strong alumni and media support, and a faculty with an excellent blend of academic and professional experience. The journalism faculty includes veterans from Business Week, The New York Times, ABC News, the Detroit News, the Miami Herald, the Denver Post and The Wall Street Journal. The advertising faculty includes former executives with McCann Erickson and McFarland and Drier.
The dean provides academic, professional and executive leadership; maintains a collegial climate supportive of excellence in teaching, research and professional integrity; and takes a leadership role in raising funds and cultivating relationships with alumni and within the profession.
Applicants for this position should demonstrate experience in and awareness of the profession. Candidates should have a record of demonstrated leadership and administrative skills; experience in an academic environment and in the classroom. The successful candidate must have the experience and/or academic credentials that would qualify for an appointment as a full professor with tenure in the College.
Applicants must complete the Faculty/Administrative Information form at http://employment.unl.edu, using requisition #090355. Applications should be received by September 30, 2009, to ensure full consideration and should include a letter of interest, detailed curriculum vitae, and names and contact information for at least three professional references.
