Initiative for Teaching and Learning Excellence Teaching and Learning Workshop: ITLE-4

Supporting Student Writing Within and Across the Disciplines

Friday, October 5
10:30 - noon
Kauffman Center

Chris Thaiss
Clark Kerr Presidential Chair and Director of the University Writing Program University of California-Davis

Year 4 of the Initiative for Teaching and Learning Excellence (ITLE-4) encourages faculty from all disciplines to recognize and enhance their role in helping students improve their writing. We know that students write well when they are offered thoughtful writing instruction within and across the disciplines throughout their college careers.

This presentation will address writing instruction concerns shared by faculty across disciplines. Dr. Chris Thaiss will discuss results of a four-year, cross-disciplinary study of faculty and students from a wide range of majors, illuminating disciplinary assumptions, expectations, and teaching practices around writing. His findings offer important insight into the teaching and writing practices that support and hinder students' writing development both within specific disciplinary contexts and across their undergraduate experience. Dr. Thaiss will also include time for interaction and questions.

This session is intended to help faculty prepare strong proposals for the ITLE-4 competition and help us all explore how we might better support undergraduate writing.
