Acting Program Information
Undergraduate Academic Programs
Performance Emphasis (Bachelor of Arts)
Program Description
The Undergraduate Acting Program provides students with the opportunity to pursue comprehensive actor training within the Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts curriculum. The Program offers eight different acting courses which move from basic process work to detailed exploration of specific technical and stylistic demands. The Program also offers four semesters each of voice and speech training and movement training. Structured in coordination with the acting course sequence, courses in voice, speech and movement move from basic work on the actor's physical and vocal awareness and availability to training which focuses on craft areas such as stage combat and stage dialects. All courses in the acting curriculum focus on bridging the gap between the theoretical and the practical. The primary goals of the Undergraduate Acting Program are to enable student actors to develop a creative process which will allow them to collaborate fully with other theatre artists and to provide student actors with a foundation in process.
Students wishing to complete the Performance Emphasis are reviewed and screened for continuation in the emphasis midway through the semester during which they are enrolled in THEA 223 Intermediate Acting I (typically their third semester as majors). The review for each student includes an interview, an audition, and an analysis of the student's overall academic and artistic record, all of which are used to determine the student's potential for success throughout the course of study. Those students who are permitted to continue in the Performance Emphasis are permitted to enroll in THEA 224 Intermediate Acting II and in subsequent required Performance Emphasis courses.
