Design / Technical Production (Bachelor of Fine Arts)

Admission Requirement
Students must meet the Hixson-Lied College of Fine & Performing Arts admission requirements in order to be eligible for this emphasis.  Contact the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film office to declare this emphasis (402-472-2072, ext. 1).  The Carson School reserves the right to limit the number of students admitted into the program.


Portfolio Presentation for Scholarship Money

Scholarship money is available via a portfolio presentation (individual scholarship awards vary).  Portfolio presentation, interview and grades are the primary criteria used to award these scholarships.

Portfolio presentation times are available on most Friday mornings, by appointment (deadline is February 1, 2013).  Presentations must be made in person on campus, or by special arrangement.  Contact the Admissions Coordinator at (402) 472-2072, ext. 1 (theatrearts@unl.edu) for more information or to schedule an appointment.


Design/Technical Portfolio Presentation Guidelines
  • Bring a résumé detailing any theatre experience, references, academics and employment
  • Two letters of recommendation (letters should be no longer than one page)
  • If you have not been admitted to UNL, bring your ACT or SAT score, class rank, and copies of your high school or transfer student transcripts (UNL admission deadline is May 1)
  • Incoming freshman must have an ACT score of 22, or an SAT score of 1020 or better.  Transfer students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (no exceptions)
  • Business-casual dress is preferred
  • Bring a portfolio, which can include the following;
    1. Photographs of productions you've worked on or designed
    2. Artistic work, including photographs, sculpture, drawings, paintings, etc.
    3. Drafting or technical drawings
    4. Lighting Designers, Sound Designers and Stage Managers should include prompt books
    5. Costume Designers should include renderings with fabric swatches
    6. Set Designers should include renderings and/or models
Note: Majors are required to present a portfolio of their work to the faculty and students at the beginning of each semester.  These presentations are used for educational purposes, portfolio development, and design assignment.

Husker Weekday Visits, Red Letter Day visits, and tours can be arranged through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Office of Admissions (472-2023 or 1-800-742-8800).  Red Letter Day visits are senior Open Houses.
