Graduate Students

Andy Converse - is in his second year of studies toward the Doctor of Music Arts degree in trombone performance at the University of Nebraska. He received his Master of Music degree from the University of Nebraska and his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of South Dakota. He has performed with the Sioux City Symphony, Okoboji Summer Theatre , Sioux City Municipal Band, Rapid City Municipal Band, Lincoln Municipal Band, Dick Dittman Big Band, Monday Night Big Band, and the Koper-Messing Quintet. Most recently he was a participant at the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors and Orchestral Musicians in Hancock, Maine for the 2007 season. He has also studied with Dr. Lawrence Mitchell and Vance Shoemaker.

Jay Siverson- received a BA in Business Administration from Augustana College (SD) and was an All-American in the 4 x 400 meter indoor relay for Division II before continuing study in music at Western Michigan University with Dr. Steve Wolfinbarger and the Cleveland Institute of Music with Mr. Steve Witser. Jay has participated in master classes with Chris Dudley, Andrew Glendening, Christian Lindberg, the Boston Brass, the Canadian Brass, and the American Brass Quintet.   He has also had the opportunity to take private lessons with Peter Ellefson, Mark Kellogg, Ronald Barron, Joseph Alessi, Buddy Baker, and Dee Stewart. Jay has performed with numerous academic and professional ensembles, including the Southwest Symphony (MI), the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre, the Michigan Bach Collegium, the South Dakota Symphony, the Heartland of America USAF Band, the Sioux Falls Municipal Band (as soloist), the Sioux Falls Community Playhouse, and the Sioux Falls Big Band and other groups. Jay has two years experience in brass repair and has studied private composition.   Awards include Phi Kappa Phi (2005) and Pi Kappa Lambda (2001).

Undergraduate Students


Andrew Binkard- is a fifth-year senior BME student from Des Moines, IA. At UNL, he has performed as principal in the Wind Ensemble, lead in jazz 1, the graduate trombone quartet, and can be heard on the jazz band's 2006 album, "Minimal Effort." Andrew has also performed with the UNL Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, Nebraska Trombone Ensemble, and Cornhusker Marching Band. This year he has been awarded a UCARE research grant to assist Dr. Scott Anderson in compiling an anthology of MIDI accompaniments to the trombone solo repertoire. Andrew's arrangement of Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek" will be premiered at the NMEA conference in Lincoln in November.

Teresa Dwyer- is a junior tenor trombonist from Hastings, Nebraska. She graduated from Hastings High School where she performed with various instrumental and vocal ensembles. She was a member of the National Honor Society and International Thespian Society and participated in the NMEA All-State Choir and the Nebraska Wesleyan Honor Band. Teresa has performed with the Symphonic Band, Concert Choir, UNL Trombone Ensemble, trombone quartet, and the Jazz II ensemble during her time at UNL. She spent three years playing lead baritone for the Blue Stars Drum & Bugle Corps where she also served as section leader. Teresa is a Regents Scholar and Elks MVS Scholar pursuing a degree in Music Education.

 

John Sens-is a Junior Music Performance and Environmental Studies double major. He plays the bass trombone under the instruction of Dr. Scott Anderson. John has performed with many university ensembles, most notably, Jazz Ensemble 1, the Wind Ensemble, the Cornhusker Marching Band, and the UNL Trombone Choir. John also performs with a diverse number of groups outside of the university, from a polka band to a church brass choir. Over the years, he has performed in several musicals including Oliver, Bye Bye Birdie, and Cinderella. John has managed a private lesson studio which consisted of several students in various grade levels. In his free time, John enjoys reading, listening to music, and cooking.

Matt Walley-is a Junior tenor trombonist from Pascagoula, MS. While at Nebraska Matt has performed with the Nebraska Trombone Ensemble, UNL Symphony Orchestra, UNL Wind Ensemble, Three Bachs and a King Trombone Quartet, UNL Symphonic Band, UNL Jazz II and in association with the UNL Choirs. Matt has presented several solo recitals at Nebraska as well as a solo recital at First Baptist Church in Pascagoula, MS and on the campus of the University of South Alabama. In the summer of 2007 Matt was invited to study in the Rome Music Festival holding the position of section (rotating) trombone. Professional ensembles in which he has performed in are the Mississippi Gulf Coast Big Band as substitute tenor and bass trombone and substitute trombone in the Gulf Coast Brass Quintet. Recently Matt performed in the stage band of the musical "All Shook Up" that was performed at the Lincoln Community Playhouse. In high-school Matt was principle in the Mobile Youth Symphony Orchestra and 5th in the  MENC ALL-USA Band. Matt is pursuing the Bachelor of Arts Degree at Nebraska.

Zach Braxton-is a junior bass trombonist from Jonesboro, Arkansas. He is pursuing a degree in Music Education.

Tyanne Bennett-is a sophomore trombonist from Lexington, Nebraska. She is pursuing a degree in Music Education. In high school, Tyanne participated as first chair trombone player in school musical orchestra pits and was also the trombone player in community musical performances of Beauty and the Beast and South Pacific. She enjoyed participating in all fine arts in high school including band, jazz band, choir, swing choir, one act and speech. She also enjoyed being selected for the Nebraska Ambassadors of Music where she was first chair player, touring Europe for two weeks. This past year Tyanne kept herself busy in the UNL marching band, symphonic band, trombone ensemble, jazz band, concert choir and brass quintet. This summer she is keeping busy by working at the baseball diamonds in her home town and also teaching trombone and piano lessons to local elementary school students. Her musical interests include trombone, piano, euphonium and guitar. When she is not working on her music, Tyanne enjoys reading, road trips, and watching movies with her friends.

Matt Juhl- is a music education major from Papillion, NE. He currently performs at UNL with Jazz II, the Cornhusker Marching Band, Symphonic Band, the Nebraska Trombone Ensemble, and Grandmother's Friday Night Pep Band. He has also participated in various UNL vocal ensembles. His primary area of interest is music composition and arranging. During the summer, MJ enjoys lifeguarding and community theatre and is an avid runner.

Craig Mathis- is a Freshman Music Education Major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Craig currently performs as the co-principal chair of the UNL Wind Ensemble, lead trombonist in the UNL Jazz I, is a member of the UNL Trombone Choir, Three Bachs and a King Trombone Quartet, Misty’s Pep Band and is also a member of the Cornhusker Marching Band. He is a Regents Scholar and member of the Honors Program at UNL. Originally from Omaha, Craig is a graduate of Millard North High School. He enjoys playing in musicals for Millard North and the Elkhorn Community Theatre and has been in Pit Orchestras for Jekyll & Hyde, Cats, Oliver, and Big. Craig was also Principal chair of the Omaha Youth Symphony, Nebraska All-State Band and All-State Orchestra. He has been a featured soloist at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Omaha. In Spring 2008, Craig was selected as the winner of the John Shildneck solo competition for the Lincoln Municipal Band and performed as the featured soloist with the band on various concerts throughout the Lincoln Area. Craig is currently a student of Dr. Scott Anderson at UNL.

Marissa Penner- is a freshman at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Performance. Currently she serves as co-principle of the UNL Wind Ensemble and performs with the Nebraska Trombone Ensemble and trombone quartet, Three Bachs and a King. In high school she participated in the South Dakota All-State Band and All-State Orchestra, serving as principle trombone in each. In addition to her association with the band, she was a member of the South Dakota Honors Choir, and National Honors Choir. In 2007 Marissa was the recipient of the Henry Charles Smith Award for her performance in the South Dakota Symphony’s Young Artist Competition. Recently she was runner-up in the Lincoln Municipal Band’s John Shildneck Competition, and she was a finalist in the Arapahoe Philharmonic’s Concerto Competition. Over the past three years Marissa has spent her summers performing with the Sioux Falls Municipal Band.

Joe Ghormley-is a freshman trombonist from Lincoln, Nebraska. He graduated from Lincoln High School where he participated in the symphonic band, jazz band, orchestra, and marching band. He was also an honors student and in the top percentage of his graduating class. Joe also enjoys being on stage either singing or acting.

Micah Hesterman- is a freshman Music Education major from Grand Island, Nebraska. He recently graduated from Northwest High School where he was involved in National Honor Society, Student Council, Speech, Track, Cross Country, Band, Jazz Band, Show Band, Choir, and Musical. Through high school, he participated in various honor ensembles such as NE All-State Choir, UNL Winter Winds Festival, Hastings College Honor Band, Central Conference Honor Band, and All-City Honor Band. In his free time, he enjoys reading, watching movies, listening to music, and just hanging out with friends.

Ryan Juhl- is a freshman music education major from Papillion, NE. A graduate of Papillion-LaVista South High School, he was involved with Marching, Concert, and Jazz bands, as well as many choral ensembles. Ryan is currently involved in Marching and Symphonic bands, as well as Big Red Express. He is also apart of Concert Choir and Varsity Chorus.
