Graduate Students
Josh Deutmeyer- is a second year Masters student. He enters graduate school after serving as the Director of Bands at Montezuma Schools in Montezuma, IA. He attended Iowa State University where he earned his bachelors degree in music education and studied with Dr. David Stuart. Mr. Deutmeyer has also studied in Vienna, Austria where he studied trombone with William McElheney of the Vienna Philharmonic. He taught and performed music in the Kvinherad Kommune in southern Norway where he was featured soloist with the Rosendal Musikklag.
Sean Dyke-from Pensacola, Florida, received his Bachelor of Music in trombone performance and Bachelor of Music Education Instrumental Emphasis from The University of Southern Mississippi where he studied under Dr. Marta Hofacre and Dr. Bruce Tychinski. During his residency, he has won multiple competitions in the state of Mississippi. Mr. Dyke has played with Mr. Ellis Marsalis (jazz pianist), Mr. Steve Weist (associate professor of jazz studies, University of North Texas), Mr. Paul McKee (Assistant Professor of jazz trombone at Florida State University), Mr. Colin Williams (principal trombonist of Atlanta Symphony Orchestra), Mr. Mark Lusk (professor of trombone, Penn State University), and The United States Air Force Band of the Rockies. In 2008, he toured Italy to perform with the Italian Army Band and the Matera Wind Symphony. While at USM, he played under the direction of Dr. Thomas Fraschillo, Dr. Steven Moser, Mr. Larry Panella, and Dr. Jay Dean. He has performed professionally with several area orchestras; the Meridian Symphony Orchestra (MS) and the Mobile Symphony Orchestra (AL). Collegiately, with The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Dyke has performed in several musical productions such as The Music Man, Crazy for You, Fiddler on the Roof, Guys and Dolls, and Carmen.
Undergraduate Students
John Sens-is a fifth year Music Performance and Environmental Studies with an emphasis in Natural Resources double major. John has performed with many university ensembles, most notably, Jazz Ensemble 1, Jazz Ensemble 2, Wind Ensemble, the Cornhusker Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and the UNL Trombone Choir. John leads a polka band called “Less Talk More Polka,” which has played in many different venues around the Lincoln area, including the Lincoln Czech Festival, Celebrate Lincoln, and the Wilber Czech Festival. John has composed several pieces for the band, and is learning the button accordion as well. Over the years, he has performed in several musicals including Oliver, Bye Bye Birdie, and Cinderella. He regularly performs with other Lincoln area ensembles including the Monday Night Big Band, the Lincoln Municipal Band, and numerous churches.
Matt Walley-is a senior music performance major from Pascagoula, MS. While at Nebraska Matt has performed with the Nebraska Trombone Ensemble, UNL Symphony Orchestra, UNL Philharmonia, UNL Wind Ensemble, UNL Symphonic Band, UNL Jazz II and in association with the UNL Choirs. Matt has presented several solo recitals at Nebraska as well as a solo recital at First Baptist Church in Pascagoula, MS and a solo performance on the campus of the University of South Alabama. In the summer of 2007 Matt was invited to study in the Rome (Italy) Music Festival holding the position of section (rotating) trombone. Matt has also studied trombone with Michael Mulcahy at Northwestern University and Marc Meyers at the Conservatoire de Musique de la Ville de Luxembourg. Matt has performed with The Coast Big Band, Mississippi Baptist Symphony Orchestra, Monday Night Big Band, the Lincoln Municipal Band, and the Gulf Coast Brass Quintet. Recently, he performed in the pit of the Lincoln Community Playhouse's production of "The Producers." Other musicals Matt has been involved with are "All Shook Up" at the Lincoln Community Playhouse and in UNL production of both "Dead Man Walking" and "Carousel." In addition to his music studies Matt is a semi-professional photographer, Warden of the Upsilon Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha, and serves as the webmaster for Phi Mu Alpha Upsilon Chapter. Matt is pursuing the Bachelor of Arts Degree at Nebraska.
Tyanne Bennett- is currently a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music -Research track, with a minor in Psychology. Her ensembles this past year included the University of Nebraska Marching Band where she served as rank leader, Nebraska Trombone Ensemble, Horsemen Trombone Quartet, and Symphonic Band. Although trombone is her primary instrument, she also has musical interests in piano, euphonium, and guitar. Looking towards a masters degree in music therapy, she is beginning her thesis on music's influence on the development of autistic children. Outside of schoolwork, Tyanne stays involved in music as president of Kappa Kappa Psi, the National College Honorary Band Fraternity. Tyanne is a member of the University Honors Program, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and the American Music Therapy Association. She is also very active in her campus church, the Lutheran Center, through which she received a summer job as a camp counselor.
Craig Mathis-is a junior Music Education Major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During Craig's time at UNL, he has been a member of the UNL Symphony Orchestra, both Jazz Ensembles, the Wind Ensemble, Undergraduate Trombone Quartet, Trombone Choir, Misty's Pep Band, and Cornhusker Marching Band. He can also be heard on the UNL Jazz I CD "Beyond the Plains". He is a Regents Scholar and member of the Honors Program at UNL. Originally from Omaha, Craig is a graduate of Millard North High School. He enjoys playing in musicals for Millard North and the Elkhorn Community Theatre and has been in Pit Orchestras for Jekyll & Hyde, Cats, Oliver, and Big. Craig was also Principal chair of the Omaha Youth Symphony, Nebraska All-State Band and All-State Orchestra. He has been a featured soloist numerous times at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Omaha. In Spring 2008, Craig was selected as the winner of the John Shildneck solo competition for the Lincoln Municipal Band. He has also performed on masterclasses with Joseph Alessi, Carl Lenthe & Ralph Sauer. Craig is currently a student of Dr. Scott Anderson at UNL.
Marissa Penner- is a junior music performance major at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Performance. Currently she serves as co-principle of the UNL Wind Ensemble and performs with the Nebraska Trombone Ensemble and trombone quartet, Three Bachs and a King. In high school she participated in the South Dakota All-State Band and All-State Orchestra, serving as principle trombone in each. In addition to her association with the band, she was a member of the South Dakota Honors Choir, and National Honors Choir. In 2007 Marissa was the recipient of the Henry Charles Smith Award for her performance in the South Dakota Symphony’s Young Artist Competition. Recently she was runner-up in the Lincoln Municipal Band’s John Shildneck Competition, and she was a finalist in the Arapahoe Philharmonic’s Concerto Competition. Over the past three years Marissa has spent her summers performing with the Sioux Falls Municipal Band.
Joe Ghormley-is a junior trombonist from Lincoln, Nebraska. He graduated from Lincoln High School where he participated in the symphonic band, jazz band, orchestra, and marching band. He was also an honors student and in the top percentage of his graduating class. Joe also enjoys being on stage either singing or acting.
Micah Hesterman- is a junior Music Education major from Grand Island, Nebraska. He is a 2007 graduate from Northwest High School where he was involved in National Honor Society, Student Council, Speech, Track, Cross Country, and numerous vocal and instrumental ensembles. He was a member of several honor ensembles in high school such as the NMEA All-State Choir, UNL Winter Winds Festival, Hastings College Honor Band, Central Conference Honor Band, and All-City Honor Band. At UNL, he participates in the Cornhusker Marching Band, Big Red Express Pep Band, Symphonic Band, Varsity Mens' Chorus, Trombone Choir, and The Four Horsemen Trombone Quartet. He is also in the Honors Program and stays active at the University Lutheran Chapel, where he is a Freshman Night Bible Study leader. He lifeguards and enjoys running, watching movies, listening to music, and being completely random.
Joe Mumm-is a sophomore music performance major. He hails from Rapid City, South Dakota where he was active in its musical scene. He has served as the bass trombonist for the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra, the principal trombonist for South Dakota’s 2007 All-State Orchestra, the lead trombonist for several of South Dakota’s All-State Band and All-State Jazz Band events, and in 2007 he received 2nd place in Rapid City’s Young Artist competition. At UNL he is active in both the classical and jazz districts of music. Eventually, Joe seeks to make a name for himself in the musical world—possibly as a worldwide soloist, possibly as a front man for a revival of the big band era—but only time will tell such outcomes. When not engaged in a musical enterprise of sorts, Joe spends his time either writing, reading, or conversing with close friends.
Karl Lyden- is a sophomore music performance and environmental studies double major. He has participated in the UNL Symphonic Band, UNL Wind Ensemble, UNL Jazz Ensemble I, and UNL Jazz Combo II and III. Outside of UNL, he is a member of Double Shot, a jazz fusion sextet with performing engagements in Omaha and Lincoln. Karl graduated from Westside High School in Omaha, Nebraska where he was involved in band, jazz band, marching band, show band, several jazz combos, Medical Club, and National Honor Society. He has attended many honor bands and festivals, such as the Metropolitan Area Youth Jazz Orchestra, Nebraska All-State Jazz Band, Young Lions All-Star Band, UNL Winter Winds, UNL Honor Jazz Weekend, and the UNC Greeley Jazz Festival. In high school, Karl was the recipient of such awards as Outstanding Soloist of the Day at the Bluffs Jazz Festival and the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. In spring 2009, Karl was selected as the winner of the NJO Young Jazz Artist Competition. He will perform with the NJO in late October of 2009.
Chad Dalrymple-is a sophomore music performance major with minors in German and Czech. He has been involved in singing and instrumental ensembles at UNL. He currently studies bass trombone with Dr. Scott Anderson.
Ryan Riss- is a freshman studying the trombone at UNL. His past musical experiences during high school includes playing in musicals, symphonic concerts, achieveing superior ratings during solo/ensemble contests, four all state jazz bands, three all state bands, and two all state orchestras. He has marched with his instrument for more than four years, has been involved a small big band with his friends, playing at various restaurants and parks, and other organizations. He has passed the Marine Band Corps playing audition, and has received a Sempre Fidelis award from the Marines. However, Ryan joined the National Guard in South Dakota in a field different than music. He hopes that he can transfer to the Nebraska National Guard upon completing his training, so that he may perform drill duties in Lincoln. This will delay his initial entry into UNL until Spring of 2010.
