David H. Allen has served as dean of the College of Engineering since 2002. He came to UNL following more than 20 years as a faculty member in the Aerospace Engineering Department at Texas A&M University, and previous visiting professorships in Australia and France.
Allen earned the 2008 Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award from the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges and the 2008 T.H.H. Pian International Research Award from the International Conference on Computational and Experimental Sciences. He is a fellow in the Society of Engineering Science and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Allen earned his degrees from Texas A&M: a doctorate in aerospace engineering, a master's in civil engineering, and a bachelor's in aerospace engineering. He also served three years as a weather officer in the U.S. Air Force. A Registered Professional Engineer, Allen's current research focuses on modeling of the mechanical response of viscoelastic and viscoplastic media to both mechanical and thermal loadings. Recent applications studied by Allen include prediction of the response of tank armor to ballistic impact and life prediction of asphaltic pavement due to repeated tire loadings.
Allen is an avid proponent of international internships and study abroad opportunities. During the past 13 years, he has led more than 750 university students in 27 study abroad programs in 19 countries.
