Lincoln (Neb.) - Oct. 10, 1997 - "The Religious Dimension That Will Not Quit: The Persistence of Belief in a Secular," will be the title of the next E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Peter J. Gomes, Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and minister in the Memorial Church at Harvard University, will deliver the address at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts, 12th and R streets.
Gomes (rhymes with "homes") notes the view that the world is more and more a secular place and that among pluralistic and sophisticated people, religion plays a less substantial role. However, he says, in the United States, the Middle East, Northern Ireland, Asia and Latin America, religious conviction is at the heart of both new world orders and age-old conflicts.
Gomes, who also delivered the May commencement address at UNL, will discuss how people recognize the legitimate place of conviction and resolve the inevitable conflicts this generates.
He is the second of five speakers in the 1997-98 Thompson series. The next Thompson Forum is Nov. 12 when Thomas E. Gouttierre, dean of international studies and programs at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, will discuss "Drugs, Thugs and U.S. Interests on the Historic Silk and Spice Roads."
The lectures are free and open to the public and are also
available via satellite at sites throughout Nebraska, including
College Park in Grand Island, state colleges, community colleges
and high schools
