PRINCETON PROFESSOR TO DISCUSS NATIVE PEOPLES

Lincoln, (Neb.) - Oct. 14, 1997 - Lawrence Rosen, an anthropology professor from Princeton University, will deliver a free public lecture on native peoples at 4 p.m. Oct. 24 in the Nebraska Union on the University of Nebraska-Lincon City Campus.

In "The Rights of Indigenous Peoples," Rosen will examine international conventions concerning the rights of several groups, including the Maori of New Zealand and the Inuit of Canada. Rosen also will explore cultural separatism, cultural practices that conflict with state laws and the distinctive role of indigenous peoples as compared with minorities in nation- states.

Rosen is at UNL as the 1997 Phi Beta Kappa visiting scholar. In addition to his anthropological work at Princeton, Rosen is an adjunct law professor at Columbia University.

As an anthropologist, his research has focused on North America and the Muslim world; as a lawyer, he has worked on several American Indian cases.

Rosen earned his bachelor's degree from Brandeis University and his master's, doctoral and law degrees from the University of Chicago.
