NATIVE AUTHOR BRANT TO GIVE LECTURE, READING

Lincoln (Neb.) - Oct. 15, 1997 - Beth Brant, a writer affiliated with the Mohawk tribe of the Bay of Quinte, Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, Ontario, will deliver a lecture and reading at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Nebraska Union at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The lecture and reading are free and open to the public.

Brant is the author of five books that have contributed significantly to the survival of and the understanding of Native American culture, including "Writings as Witness: Essay and Talk, Food and Spirits: Stories, Mohawk Trail" and "I'll Sing 'Til the Day I Die: Conversations with Tyendinaga Elders."

She has received several grants and awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship and a Creative Artist Award from the Canada Council. She has published in anthologies, magazines and scholarly journals such as the Kenyon Review and Feminist Studies.

Brant also will meet with faculty, students and interested community members in an open discussion from 1:30-3 p.m. Oct. 21 in Room 228 Andrews Hall.

Brant's visit is sponsored by the UNL Women's Studies and Native American Studies programs in the College of Arts and Sciences. Additional funding is provided by the UNL departments of English and anthropology, Prairie Schooner, the Committee for Lesbian and Gay Concerns and the UNL Research Council.
