Lincoln (Neb.) - Oct. 16, 1997- A group of 50 advanced distinguished high school students and their teachers from the Lincoln and Omaha areas attended the first "Day of Discovery" Oct. 8 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Coordinated by the UNL Office of Admissions, the high school students attended a lunch with students in the University Honors Program, participated in seminars with university faculty members, toured the honors program offices and rooms in Neihardt Residence Center and attended a lecture by Susan Rosowski, Adele Hall Distinguished Professor of English.
The event was created to bring talented high school students to campus. Although many seniors visit campus on Red Letter Days or Distinguished Scholars Day, there are few campus events for high school underclassmen.
"We're finding that high school students are choosing colleges early," said Kristine Stelzer, assistant director of admissions for honors student recruitment. "Often, honors students have selected their college by the time they are juniors. If we can bring them to campus as sophomores or early in their junior year, it greatly enhances our ability to recruit them."
Stelzer and others in the Office of Admissions said they believe the event was a success, and they plan to offer it again next semester. Students who attended agree. Ben Loos, a Lincoln Northeast High School student, admitted he was suspicious of the invitation to the event, because he didn't know what to expect. Later in the day, he said the experience had been worthwhile.
"I really liked the discussion groups," Loos said. "The size of the group was just perfect. This experience helped prepare me for college."
