Lincoln (Neb.) - Oct. 9, 1997 - "Pillars of Strength" is the theme for the 87th homecoming celebration Oct. 12-18 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Popular homecoming week contests and events include the office display contest, banner contest, "Husker Howl," royalty elections, wacky olympics, all-campus pep rally, "Come On Home" reception and a carnival. New features this year are a 5- kilometer fun run and walk scheduled for 1 p.m. Oct. 12 on East Campus and a presentation by diversity speaker Marlon Christopher Smith at 8 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.
University offices that registered to participate in the office display contest will be judged at 3 p.m. Oct. 13. The winner will receive a coffee break on Oct. 24.
The pep rally will be at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the East Campus basketball courts west of the Law College. It will be followed by a fireworks display at the East Campus softball field between the plant sciences greenhouses and the animal research facility at the northeast corner of East Campus Loop.
"We hope all members of the university and Lincoln communities join us for the pep rally and the carnival," said Jane Scarrow, homecoming coordinator. "At the pep rally, there will be free University Dairy Store ice cream and live music from country western band Full Choke, in addition to our usual contests. The fireworks display after the pep rally promises to be spectacular."
The carnival will begin at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 17 on City Campus along R Street.
"The carnival will feature carnival booths, food and live music from Mother Tong, Scarrow said. "There will be many activities families can enjoy participating in together."
All students and alumni are invited to attend the "Come on Home" reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Wick Alumni Center.
Students compete in the contests and activities in teams organized by residence hall floor, greek chapter or student organization divisions. The homecoming committee will award divisional homecoming championship trophies to the groups that score the most points during the week through event participation in their division. Groups that don't place in the competition may receive additional points for group participation. Contest results will be announced at the tailgate party and division champion winners will be announced during halftime of the Nebraska-Texas Tech game Oct. 18.
