Lincoln (Neb.) - Oct. 13, 1998 - A renowned specialist on groundwater will discuss issues of environmental contamination and protection at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 21 during a visit to Nebraska, where groundwater is among the most important and abundant natural resources.
R. Allan Freeze, an internationally recognized hydrogeologist from Vancouver, B.C., will discuss toxic chemicals, human health and environmental protection during his presentation at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Bessey Hall Auditorium. His lecture is free and open to the public.
Freeze, a consultant for groundwater issues, spent years as an academic specialist and co-wrote the textbook "Groundwater" with John Cherry.
Nebraska geology professor David Loope said the presentation will address determining priorities for ensuring the safety of groundwater. Determining those priorities should include how best to meet the needs of people, such as by first protecting drinking water, he said.
"The truth is, maybe we need to take a more careful approach as to exactly what kinds of projects we want to spend our money on. It is very, very important to society," Loope said.
Freeze's lecture, titled, "A Quest for the Truth on Toxic
Chemicals, Human Health, and Environmental Protection," is
included in the 1998 T. Mylan Stout Lecture Series within the
department of geosciences. His visit is sponsored in part by a
visiting scholar grant from the NU Research Council.
