Lincoln (Neb.) - Oct. 27, 1998 - The Nebraska Council on Economic Education will coordinate a variety of activities emphasizing the importance of teaching and learning economics for K-12 students in Nebraska during Economics Education Week Nov. 1- 7.
Roger Atwood, president of the council, said the council and its five statewide centers will work with teachers to demonstrate methods for infusing economics across the curriculum.
To encourage teachers from all disciplines to join in teaching an economics lesson during Economics Education Week, a site on the World Wide Web has been developed that features a variety of lessons for teachers to use with their students. Lessons will be posted at (http://ecedweb.unomaha.edu). Teachers may print out copies of lessons to use in their classrooms as well as learn of other web locations to obtain assistance in teaching economics.
The Centers for Economic Education at Chadron State College, Wayne State College and the University of Nebraska campuses in Lincoln, Omaha and Kearney will plan activities to assist teachers. In addition, 32 Nebraska economics fellows, who are secondary school classroom teachers, will work with local teachers to emphasize the importance of economic literacy.
Atwood was joined in announcing Economics Education Week by Gov. Ben Nelson; Douglas Christensen, commissioner of the Department of Education; Sen. Ardyce Bohlke; Jack Swartz, Nebraska State Chamber of Commerce and Industry; StateTreasurer Dave Heineman; Steve Evans, vice president and branch manager of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City-Omaha Branch; and Maxine Moul, director Nebraska Department of Economic Development.
