Lincoln (Neb.) - Oct. 29, 1998 - The alumni associations of the colleges of Human Resources and Family Sciences and Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will honor several alumni award winners Oct. 31 during their annual fall gathering at the Wick Alumni Center in Lincoln.

Recipients of the College of Human Resources and Family Sciences Distinguished Alumni Awards are Patricia Knaub of Stillwater, Okla., and Sue Smith of Bella Vista, Ark. The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Alumni Association will present an Honorary Life Membership to Don Ellerbee of Hastings, Alumnus of the Year Award to Warren Fairchild of Alexandria, Va., and Award of Merit to Wayne Keim of Fort Collins and Estes Park, Colo.

Knaub, dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences at Oklahoma State University, graduated from Nebraska with a B.S. in 1961, M.S. in 1967 and Ph.D. in 1975. She is chair of the Board on Human Sciences, a national administrators group serving family and consumer sciences programs, and has served as president of the National Council on Family Relations. Knaub was an NU faculty member from 1967 to 1989 and also was associate dean for graduate studies in the College of Human Resources and Family Sciences for two years. She received an Outstanding Faculty Award from NU in 1970.

Smith earned a bachelor's degree in home economics at NU in 1950. She provides consulting services for Sue Smith and Associates, operates a travel business (Sue Smith Carefree Tours) specializing in escorted and individual tours, and manages rental property as a licensed real estate broker for Wakefield Land Company. Smith is a former executive secretary and corporate agent for the Nebraska Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (formerly NHEA) and has provided editorial services for McCook Public REA Power District, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Inc., Phi Upsilon Omicron, Norris Public Power District, Nebraska Wheat Board, Capital City Senior Squadron and Sigma Kappa sorority alumnae.

Ellerbee is executive director and owner of GMO Inc., a management firm in Hastings. Through GMO, he is executive director of the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association, Nebraska Turf Grass Foundation, Nebraska Funeral Directors Association, American Embryo Transfer Association, Society for Theriogenology and American College of Theriogenologists. He is also active in lobbying the legislature to ensure that veterinary students have a place to continue their education, organizing education for the veterinary profession and being a spokesperson at the national level.

Fairchild, class of 1949, began his career as a soil scientist for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service in Gage County. A series of progressive moves took him to positions as executive secretary of the Nebraska Soil and Water Conservation Commission, assistant commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, director of the U.S. Water Resources Council and water specialist for the World Bank in Washington, D.C. Fairchild is a consultant to the World Bank as well as an independent consultant. Even though he did not receive an engineering degree, the American Society of Civil Engineers has given him full membership because of the recognized technical role that he carried out in the water resources field.

Keim, class of 1947, retired in 1992 after a 45-year career in teaching, research and administration at Cornell (N.Y.), Iowa State, Purdue and Colorado State universities. At Purdue he developed and taught an introductory course in genetics to about 7,000 students over a 20-year period. He twice was elected by the students Best Teacher in the School of Agriculture, and the American Society of Agronomy honored him with the Agronomic Education Award. He is a past president of the Crop Science Society of America and is currently on the board of directors of the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology.
