Lincoln (Neb.) - Oct. 8, 1998 - The University of Nebraska- Lincoln's Behlen Observatory near Mead will host an open house from 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 23.
Among the featured attractions for viewing through Behlen's 30-inch reflector will be Jupiter, its moons and Saturn. Saturn will be at opposition, or in the opposite direction in the sky to the sun, the best time for most Earth-based observations of the ringed planet. The reflector also will be trained on the Ring and Dumbbell nebulas.
In addition, slide shows will be presented by physics and astronomy faculty and graduate students from NU. Amateur astronomers typically set up their telescopes outside Behlen and should provide excellent views of the waxing crescent moon and the Andromeda galaxy. Cloudy weather will limit viewing, but at least one slide show presentation will still be presented.
