Lincoln (Neb.) - Nov. 6, 1997 - More than 1,100 Nebraska high school students will converge on the University of Nebraska- Lincoln campus Nov. 13 for number-crunching contests at the eighth annual Math Day.
Created by the UNL department of math and statistics to promote mathematical prowess, Math Day includes action-packed bowl competitions, displays and recreational math activities.
Opening ceremonies begin at 8 a.m. in Kimball Hall. Competition begins at 9 a.m. in the Memorial Stadium north indoor practice football field where all participants take a multiple choice preliminary exam called PROBE I. The top 50 scorers on that test move on to take a famous essay test called PROBE II. The top 10 scorers on that exam win four-year scholarships to UNL.
Team math bowl competition begins at 10:30 a.m. in several
sites around campus. The students will break for lunch from noon
to 1 p.m. when competition resumes. Championship rounds will run
from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in Kimball Hall.
