Lincoln (Neb.) - Nov. 12, 1998 - Polish artist Maria Tyniec will be in residence at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's textiles, clothing and design department Nov. 18 through Dec. 3, working with the department's graduate students as well as young people at the Indian Center and sixth graders at Everett Elementary School.
Tyniec, who has work featured at the exhibition of Polish textiles, "Different Voices: New Art from Poland," at Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, will ask the children to embellish textiles and interlocking boards to create artifacts of personal or cultural significance.
An artist who uses folkloric imagery in her work, Tyniec has constructed pillow forms in Poland that she will bring to the United States for the children to work with. The graduate students are cutting boards into shapes that will fit together like a carpet for Tyniec and the children to embellish.
The projects that result from this collaboration will be exhibited Dec. 2-18 in the Hillestad Textiles Gallery on East Campus. Tyniec also will exhibit in the Hillestad Gallery additional pieces of her work that she brings from Poland. A public reception is planned to honor the children, their families, the graduate students and the artist from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3.
Tyniec's residency is supported by funding from the Nebraska
Arts Council. Programming for the collaboration is being
developed in consultation with Susan Marx, Everett family
outreach programmer, Everett art teacher Nora Lorraine, and Mary
Lee Johns, director of youth programming at the Indian Center.
The Strengthening Neighborhoods Partnerships supports the
outreach portion of the project.
