FEDERAL HIGHWAY SAFETY EXPERT TO LECTURE NOV. 16

Lincoln (Neb.) - Nov. 13, 1998 - Raymond A. Krammes, a Federal Highway Administration senior highway research engineer and Safety Design Division team leader, will describe a new highway safety design initiative at the Nov. 16 Mid-America Transportation Center Distinguished Lecture.

His presentation on the Interactive Highway Safety Design Model will be from 3 to 4 p.m. in Room 237 of the Walter Scott Engineering Center on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln City Campus.

The model is a suite of evaluation tools for assessing the safety impacts of design decisions. Its evaluation capabilities will help planners and designers maximize the safety benefits of highway projects within the constraints of cost, environmental and other considerations. Krammes said a small increase in the safety cost-effectiveness of individual highway improvements each year can contribute significantly to the Federal Highway Administration's strategic safety objective to reduce the number of highway-related fatalities and serious injuries by 20 percent in 10 years.

The Mid-America Transportation Center is the U.S. Department of Transportation University Transportation Center for a four- state region that includes Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Missouri. NU is the lead institution for the center, a consortium of six Midwestern universities. The center works to advance transportation-related technology and expertise through education, research and technology transfer.
