Lincoln (Nebr.) - Nov. 17, 1999 - A computer programming team from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln placed third in the North Central Regional computer programming championship held Nov. 13.
Nebraska was one of 12 sites simultaneously hosting 80 teams as part of the regional contest of the Association of Computing Machinery. The top three teams overall were hosted at the Nebraska site: Iowa State University (solved six programming problems in 673 minutes), South Dakota State University (solved six problems in 692 minutes), and University of Nebraska-Lincoln (solved six problems in 734 minutes.)
NU's third place team consists of Computer Science and Engineering students Joshua Brown, Yixin Guo, Chad Hendry and reserve Jeffrey Ifland. Charles Riedesel coached the team. A second NU team placed 24th by solving three problems in 426 minutes.
The winning Iowa State team will go on to world competition in March in Orlando. The South Dakota and Nebraska teams may still have a chance at world competition if chosen for wild card slots.
